My back is still swelling 1 and a half years after surgury. I had an l5-s1 fusion I swell up at fusion site, about 2 inches out of my back and about 6 bye 6 plus i swell under tailbone plus i am discolered, no doctors have heard of it, has anyone heard of this. I am also in severe pain all the time, I was told the screws were to long and when i bend they seem to catch and c cause a loud popping and shifting at my fusion site. I have asked about spinal fluid and they seem to think it's not. But throughout the day, everyday pain increases and swelling. I am pretty much couch ridden useing ice everynight. If i do even light housework, I pay dearly for it. Whish I could insert pics, nobody had seen anything like it. The whole area around the fusion site, is sore to the touch, and the newly developed swellling near tailbone is also sore! The pain also radiates across back and into groin, some foot numbness, legs acke"no answers". after two years I went to a doe and she had discovered that I had ended up with a ******* yeast infection, so I researched yeast and found out that 1 out of 600 people can get this disease through tainted surgery tools. Now I am not discolered and do not swelling like I used too. and the pain is not so intense in that spot. I had went alll over from doc to doc specialist to specialist, and asked them all if it was infected, and was told I would be in the hospital! I am still in major pain but can move around now, I was bedridden for 2.5 years and useing elecric carts to get around. You can get systemic yeast from other things that must be ruled out first, because it is rare and usually caused by other factors. I hope this info can atleast help one person as it did me. I am still in need of one more surgery but feel alot better.

No, I have not heard of this before, but I was wondering if you have inflammation in that area, is there a test they can do to check?

Hi. I have swelling around my surgery when I lift anything, It looks like a softball smacked me in the back, My tail bone hurts like crazzy if I sit on it . As far as swelling around it , I dont know ? I had L4 - L5 - S1 fusion with screws, Long ones to, If you find out anything let me know, My Dr tells me Im fine ??? But still in pain.
Sorry to hear your still having problems so far out after your surgery.
Not trying to worry you ~ but I had VERY similar symptoms and my fusion has failed.
I too had wished I could insert a pic and show folks on the boards for EVEN my Dr has never seen or heard of such a thing! I like you, get very swollen as the day go on and end up like you on the couch packed in ice EVERY AFTERNOON! Along with the swelling, I actually bruise! Tons of brusing - NS thinks it's loose hardware. I also have the pain and pressure in the groin, hip, butt and leg spasms. My leg pain though is mostly neuropathic. I had the same level fused as you did.
Not saying YOUR fusion has failed but obviously something's not right. Are you still under a Dr's care for your back? IF not I think you should call and get into see someone soon!

I called a Dr. in my area, They called me back, Told me I had to see there chiropractor before they would see me, The chiropractor didnt know about it, He said he will try to get an appointment with the orthopedic spine specialist. What is wrong with these Doctor's .? No one wants to see me after my surgery. They tell me its spasm's, Some is, But not all of it is, I had my surgery 1 year ago,
yes i bruise everday, in diferant spots, tailbone swelling and black and blue lately. Still seeing a doc but they don't know, won't really help with the pain they got there money lol!

When I can home from surgery on the 25th I had them brusies too right around my tailbone. They were blue. And I was swollen too. But after a couple of days they went away, but last week I was I guess I was moving around too much, yes I the type of person that has to get up and move, I just can't help it. But I noticed that the bruising was back and at the end of my tailbone was kinda swollen. But this week it is gone. So I get confused too. I hope everything turns out ok for you. Tracy
Here's a thought...I broke both legs in a rock climbing accident, and had a rod and six screws in my shin. Although the Docs were gonna leave all that hardware in, after six months, the pain and swelling around the hardware was constant, and they removed it for me. If you have little or no subcutaneus fat around the hardware site, it was explained to me that you can chronically irritate the underside of the dermis, which won't be relieved until the hardware is minimized or removed.
Hmmm,,Maybe thats why I have this pain in my back ? The Doctor that did my surgery said everything was fine back there.. Im not stupid, Its been a year and I can hardly stand the pain, Its almost impossible to see another doctor after surgery, They all say sorry, Cant do a thing for ya ?
how do u delete an old thread? P.s. still in so much pain and no help. I was supposed to have an medial branch block, they preped me then said they couldn't do it the screws were in the way.
Me too, just found out today that I have two more herniated discs, pain is my life! I wish I knew what to do and where to go, cause i can't take it anymore, two much pain to live with.
