Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

It seems like when I walk on the treadmill, that it provokes pain even more but I also heard that it takes time to strengthen those muscles. But, how many of you find that walking on a treadmill helps your low back pain and how long did it take before you realized that it was helping?

Have you been to a PT? There are other ways to do that. I go in the therapy pool at the Y a couple of times a week.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

Hi there,
Treadmilling is suppose to be excellent for your lower back and well everything else as well. I have numerous problems with my lower back. I bought a treadmill last summer and have been doing it as much as possible. Since I stared my phyiso with accpuncture a few months ago I've been doing it everyday and it has gotten a lot easier. Have you tried physio? I would strongly suggest it along with accpuncture, it really helps. Swimming is also an excellent way of getting excersice. Good luck with all. Take care and take it slow. Kristy.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

You need to start really slow on a treadmill if you have back pain or an injury. After I had hurt my back when I first started going on the treadmill I walked 1.0 mph at the most and did it for 5 minutes the first time because I was scared. Then I increased to 10 minutes the next day. It seemed to make my back feel better pretty quickly. I notice that once I get up to 10 minutes my back is warmed up and any stiffness I had or soreness is gone for a couple hours. You might also be sore the next day from it but if you keep it up it will really help. Listen to your body though. If it makes it hurt too much then stop. Try doing a little each day though at first. I am up to doing 25 minutes at 1.0 mph one day then the next day I do 12 minutes just to warm it up. I still have soreness in my back but just 2 weeks ago I could not lift my leg to cross them and uncross them without using my hands to lift my leg up. It hurt way too bad. I limped to my car. Now I have way less pain and can walk normally now. Just don't go too fast on the treadmill. If it hurts then slow it way down. Just two days ago I felt like it was a little too sore and I slowed it to .8 and it really felt good. I was able to keep walking on it and I felt better when I was done. Then the next day I walked at 1.2 mph because I felt great. You just need to listen to your body and pain level.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

Start slow and work up gradually. After not being able to walk more than a couple of minutes for a year or so, I finally got the proper diagnosis and treatment. Because of my hx, I still have to take it easy, but now I am up to a mile. I started with 5 minutes at only 1.4 mph or so. Gradually increased every 4-5 days and now am at 1 mile doing 2.1 mph. Certainly not a run, but better.
Do listen to your body. When you get too sore, it is because you are doing more than you should, so drop back for a while longer. Slow and steady is the key.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

I have found since my micro-d last July that the treadmill aggravates my back no matter how slow I go. I have better success with walking around the neighborhood. I have tried the treadmill a few times trying to see what the problem was, but I am doomed the next day. I can handle regular walking much better. But its whatever works for you...Good Luck !

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

[QUOTE=Vibration man]I have bulging disc at L4-L5 level and it is affecting my both legs. Back pain in minimal, mainly leg problems and strange sensations down my legs.

Have you ever had surgery? Do you have an orthopedic spine specialist?

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

vib man,
When was your last MRI? I had tingling and numbness and could hardly walk---I had severe spinal stenosis. My OSS did a laminectomy for that and while he was in there he stabilized my spine by fusing it from L3-S1. My back pain was minimal. You sound like you've waited long enough. Does your doctor have a spine fellowship?

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

Get another opinion. Do you have an orthopedic spine specialist? A neurosurgeon told me I wasn't in enough pain for surgery, and he didn't know/couldn't do anything about my legs. The OSS didn't hesitate to go in and fix me. A lot of neurosurgeons "do" backs without having a fellowship. Check out spine.org. They aren't all surgeons but they are all spine specialists.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

Hi everyone.
I have a treadmill and a eliptical. Well the treadmill is put away, actually going to sell in garage sale. Anyway I use my eliptical machine and it is so wonderful. NO strain on the back at all. I have alot of lower back and cervical issues . I started using my machine again about 2 weeks ago and although I am only on it for 15 minutes it has no impact so i do not feel bad, (only out of shape ) Anyway that is my story ..

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

My understanding is that it is arthritis inside the spinal canal. The nerves/cord become compressed/pinched. Spine.org has an explanation.

Re: Does walking on a treadmill help your low back pain?

Stenosis is the narrowing of a pathway for a nerve.

myspine: please get a second opinion. You may not be getting the whole story with your MRI. They do not always show everything that is going on.

Good luck.
