Microdiskectomy reveals hole in disk

I just came home from a Microdiskectomy, that went well but provided my surgeon some surprises. He was expecing a herniation at L5S1 and wound up finding a hole in the disk that i'm guessing has been there for at least six months (diskogram in aug 2004 revealed "shoddy" disk). He also found a large fragment, which he removed. MRI did a poor job of letting us know what was really going on in there. Does anyone have any information about holes in disks repairing themselves, or how this might affect my healing process?

Re: Microdiskectomy reveals hole in disk

Well, sometimes with a lot of time and a lot of rest a tear in a disc will repair itself; usually not. If you are like most of us and can't spend a whole lot of time lying down, then you probably aren't going to heal without treatment.

Re: Microdiskectomy reveals hole in disk

Carol's right, sometimes a disc can heal it'self with effort on your part to rest & allow this to happen.

I honestly have NEVER heard of a hole in a disc, perhaps someone else here has?

Just wanted to wish you well
