Unhappy F/U tomorrow on Discogram ..I am scared

O.K. so I have thought this out in my head way to much
If I have A large tear in the C4-5 and complete blow out so to speak in the C5-6 and a tear in the C6-7, my doc is probably going to say that he can not help me...because there is not a healthy disc above and below the really bad one.....Right? I mean when he originally thought the l5-s1 level was involved when I had my lumbar discogram, he said that given the l4-5 was so bad and the l3-4 was virtually gone from a previous surgery if the 5-1 was bad to I would have to wait and see what kind of technology was going to be available, because a 3 level fusion he was not going to do on me. So what am I going to do if this is the case with my neck too????????? I am taking norco, robaxin, topamax, elavil, and advil. What more can I do. I still work full time and take care of my kids, but to tell you the truth I have no idea what to do if he says he can not help me...Oh and I am still waiting for the SCS Implant trial. I feel like a mess...............I have NEVER had and injury.
I am calling out all my buddies here. I have worked myself up into a complete panic that I will be stuck like this.
Shelley

I hope the doctor is able to offer you some options for your condition. I'd ask about all possible surgeries that could repair or replace at any or all the levels reported on. Good Luck tomorrow.

Dear Shelley,

Try not to panic - I totally understand your concerns - and you have a point in that it's a touchy situation when you have trouble at so many levels.

Try to stay calm and wait and see what the NS says, then let us know.

We will keep you in our thoughts today
and send you positive vibes!

BW

Re: F/U tomorrow on Discogram ..I am scared

Shelley,
I am so sorry to hear of all the problems they are finding, I totally understand your fear, my hubby used to tell me "Just don't think about it" But we all know thats not possible.
The bad news I see in your post is the Advil, is there anyway you could try Tylenol or something? You shouldn't be taking Ibubrofen, it might make matters worse.
The good thing I see in your post is the honesty of what your Doctor is saying, in a way he is saying he doesn't think HE could do the type of surgery you will need. Thats a good thing, because if he doesn't feel comfortable with you, then you really don't want him doing the surgery anyway.
It's his way of saying it's over his head.
I would think at this point he might refer you to someone he feels more confident with, to take care of you.
I know you can't just turn off your brain. But is there something you could do to distact yourself? Do you live in an area where the weather is nice enough to go outside with the kids? A Park, The Beach, anywhere? Or Visiting a family member or friend who would let you talk about it and try to get it off your mind and help you feel better?
Talking to someone I think is the most important way to get answers and just having someone listen is a big +.
If not, always know we are here for you!
You can talk to us till the keys fall off your computer and we will STILL be here for you. And if you happen to go MIA on us, we'll just drag you back, ya know "YOOOOO-HOOOOO SHELLEY???".
But always know you won't be abandoned.
How old are your kids???
I have to head to PT for an hour, but will check back as soon as I get home *K*?
Love, Stardust

Re: F/U tomorrow on Discogram ..I am scared

Hi,

Stardust if right that maybe this doctor isn't the best one for you. It would especially make me feel so if he says that he cannot help you because the one above or below is bad. Hon, I've had four surgeries to fuse 3 levels each time. One was required when I was in a wreck and a previous fusion broke. Then my fourth surgery just 3 months ago was 10 (yep ten) levels fused, so forget one above or below being bad being a hold out.

Don't think you said if your doc was ortho or neuro or more importantly if they were a neuro or other spine specialist instead of say general neuro surgeon. Don't panic as while one doctor may not be able to help you, if surgery is recommended, you want to get a minimum of two independent opinions anyway (not from someone they refer you to). Please check the sites on the web where you can find doctors by state and cities and by specialties. I obtained 9 opinions before I found my current ortho spine specialist when I knew I needed a new spine surgeon. I'm active and I'm doing amazingly well for what this body has been through, so I hope you will look around and see if you indeed have the best surgeon for your problem. He needs to be honest on chances and able to tell you how many times he has done the surgery you might need, and above all you need to have that feeling that this is the surgeon for you at this time.

If surgery is the answer, again don't panic by focusing on the negative. Look at the positive of getting out of pain, at being able to go back to doing the things you want to do, and of your family and you having your life back in so many ways. It can be scary, and yes, I do get frightened, but I believe that the Lord has allowed us the smarts to look for the person needed, and that he will guide the surgeon's hand.

Best wishes and let us know how you are doing. We're around if you need to vent or just need some words of support.

Re: F/U tomorrow on Discogram ..I am scared

Hi ya'll
I went to the doctor today. And he will do a ACDF of th C5-6 level, he said eventually the 4-5 will probably be done , but one thing at a time and he will take a better look once in there. So I am scheduled for June 1, with my work schedule I am off for summer then and there is no driving with the neck brace on for 4 weeks. so in the mean time..........................
My SCS trial is Finally scheduled For March 28
Can ya'll believe it, I am finally going to get the trial, I am so excited to get this trial.
It seems like I have so much going on, but maybe this will help and make the time a little easier while I am waiting for the NEXT surgery. If the trial goes good then I will have the perm. one put in. That would be so awesome.
Thanks for responding to my post. Ya'll are great. My doc said he knows i feel like this is never ending but he is going to put me "back " together as best as possible.
Now I will have to research about this surgery so I know what to expect. He said it is not as bad as the lumbar fusion and all I have been through, but to add on top of what I have going on ...Well he knows is alot.
O.K.thanks guys. i really need all of you.

Re: F/U tomorrow on Discogram ..I am scared

I know how you feel. I am going batty myself not knowing what the heck to do! I wish I could help you out, but how can I offer advice when I don't even know what the best options are for me? Heck, I don't even really know WHAT is wrong!
Well, I will be stuck in a panic with you if you want-strength in numbers, right?
Hmmmm, well, I wish you all the best, and hope you get yours under control!
