Agree with Ladybird - first thing is to call the doc. An x-ray may show it is a tendon or muscle versus herniation, but certainly herniation is possible. I has a total rupture only 5 months after the first discectomy. If it is a reherniation, you may want to ask about the ADR, artifical disc replacements that have been approved by the FDA. Unfortunately I had already had fusions when they were approved and had hopes they would begin doing with with fusions when I needed the next round. They have now begun that at least in trials, but I would not have qualified due to other problems. So, if you've not have massive fusions like I have, the ADR may well be a better option for you, especially at such a young age.
You didn't say anything about your doc, but I recommend that whether you prefer an ortho or a neuro, that you use one who is a spine specialist instead of general ortho or neuro.
