Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

Im getting some VERY seriuos upper back spasms. It seems to start in the traps and then spreads in shoulder blades and around into my chest right below the chest muscles. It also causes my TMJ to jerk right before a spasm. These are VERY painful and ice or heat do nothing but annoy it. i tried shock therapy and it make them 100% worse.

Ive been to the hospital multiple times and they always send me to cardiac ward thinking it might be a hear attack(because i mention cheast pain)

I finally found out its because my chest muscles inflam because of the spasm and cause my lungs to rub on my ribcage.(ouch it hurts)

The back spasms are the worst pain in my entire life. They dont let go. When I streatch with one it feels as my backs pulling me backwards.

Is there a cure?? its so bad. im only 24!! it sucks I cant hold my arms up to long or paint(motion lots of it cause them to spaz). uggh.

I dont know if its linked but I get ALOT of neck headaches I think because of all the tension in my back. There terrible too. My body hates anti-inflammatory drugs

Re: Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

Viper, I get back spasms from T7-8, tho no where near like yours. My shoulders and traps feel like my body is holding me hostage.....it hurts to breathe alot, especially taking a deep breath, and I can't hold my back up alot when out of alignment. At times it feels like a knife being plunged into my mid back. The only thing I found that helps is deep tissue pressure point massage and chiropractor. I do upper back stretches when I get migraines from it. Head tilts to the side and chin to chest. It helps some. God bless ya, I feel your pain. When doc saw my disc laying on spinal cord at T7-8 he said missie have some serious problems. :P~~~

Re: Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

Viper,

For the first time in all my spine surgeries, I had horrific spasms following my 10 level fusion. Thankfully though they are now minor and seldom. The doc gave me injections of musle relaxers in the hospital and for the trip home, and I'd had oral muscle relaxers to use as needed. Used them constantly the first 3-4 weeks, and then tapered off using them seldom now.

Have you spoken with your doctor about muscle relaxers? I use Flexeril, but there are a number of different ones out there and it may take a couple of tries before finding the right one.

Hope you get relief soon. Spasms are no fun.

Re: Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

I had an x-ray at a chiro before and he mentioned my neck bone was straight as an arrow and its caused by the tension back there. He thought it was because my traps are very weak. Ive never had 1 single doctor x-ray my spinal(dont know why they havent).

My neck headaches start if keep my neck in one place for to long. My back spasms feel as though I got 2 HUGE spikes shoved into my shoulder blades and my mucles are being twisted onto the rotating spikes.

It seems to start in the middle but the pain becomes amazing around the shoulder blades when its in feel spasm. I cant breath as you very well and if I laydown or sit its pure chest pain.

uggh. its like a lost cause

I tried skepilexin(sp?) it worked but after 2 months its effect went away(got an immunity to it)

skelaxin? I tried it, didn't do anything for me either. You need to get to an Ortho pronto and get an MRI done of your back. I was told as bad as mine is I run a risk of paralysis. I am not having surgery though, if you look it up online, it's a very scary deal for thoracic surgery. I will go to my chiro when I heal up and get massages again rather than surgery.

Demand an MRI, you may have to have a myelogram and catscan, they did that to me, not much fun there either. You have a right to know what is going on with your spine.

also get a second opinion, my insurance company paid for it. I pray you don't have a thoracic herniation, that it's just muscles, it sucks. Also, deep tissue accupunture massage helps me alot, and I carry around a tennis ball and do pressure points with that, and bought a pressure point tool online I use that I can lay down and get knots out (very gently!)

Viper,

What kind of doctors are you going to for back problems that don't do any kind of x-rays? Are you talking GP? I cannot imagine any ortho or neuro spine specialist not doing x-rays right there in their office during a comprehensive exam. If it is only muscle involvement it's possible that some injections might reduce the inflammation and spasms.

See that you go to Chiro, so what are they doing for the spasms? As I've never been to a chiro, can you tell me why you chose a chiro versus a neuro or ortho doc for your back?

Hope you find relief from the spasms soon.

Re: Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

Being so young when these starting(18) i had no clue whjo could help me. I actually contacted a research branch in colorado and they told me it was upper back spasms and they are very rare. They wanted to do a study on me but I was to far away.

I went to a chiro for awhile but it didnt help I had TONS of knots in my back he could feel and my neck was tense as heck(sometimes I wonder if my dizziness is related to this)

I have never been to an ortho for this problem and its time I corrected this. I have seen a nero once but it was for numbness in my arms all the time he didnt find anything but he didnt x-ray he just did some kind of electrode test on my muscles.

Re: Upper back spasms...help! Doctor have no clue!

Viper,

The electrode test was probably an EMG.

I encourage you to check your states licensing database of medical personnel. Search for Ortho and neuro surgeons and look at their backgrounds to find some that have had spine fellowships and/or list spine as their particular speciality. It's wise to see more than one if you can to find the best person you can work with in getting that back into good shape and keeping it there.

Best wishes and let us know how you are doing.
