Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hey Guy's ,
I really don't know what is going on, I know TexasRose tried to help with some advice, but things are changing, and I have no idea what is going on.
My S1 & L5 Posterior Fusion was 2 1/2 months ago. The surgical area used to aggravate the hip, left leg & foot, sending painful shocks down my leg (which I still get off and on).
But the surgical area no longer bothers me at all. However my left hip & leg have gotten so bad I can barely walk with pain meds.
I ask for an MRI at my last appt to see if there was a pinched nerve,But Doc said it was too early and he will do a CT Scan on May 2nd at 3 months and see if any nerves are being pinched.
But this is getting worse by the day.
My Back no longer bothers me other than when I bend down to pick something up, OCCASIONALLY ONLY I can feel a slipping or clicking feeling, like the hardware is moving a tiny bit, then moves back, the same as if you were double jointed, but my left hip & leg are extremely painful. I did not have this before the surgery, and now the pain has come around to the front lower abdomen, WHY?
I try to walk, but have to hold the lower abdomen and upper leg in the front (I didn't have surgery in the front).
I am so confused.
I got completely better with no pain at all. And now this. I believe it is connected to the surgery somehow.
I want to try to wait until my appt May 2nd. But does anyone have any idea why my left leg & such is so painful now? I am not able to do much, so I am not overdoing anything.
It's not making any sense to me, so any advice would be greatly appriciated.
Thanks in Advance,
StarDust

Does anyone know what would cause my back to "click" like it does?

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Star....I also have the left leg, hip and lower abdomen pain. Of course mine has been ongoing for 4 years now. I begin having pain in my back in april 2001...I worked everyday 10 hours a day from april till august. I would have to have help getting out of bed in the mornings, then I would go to a chiropractor before I went to work and alot of days I would go on my way home from work for deep heat massage. I did that for 4 months. Then I had an mri and was sent to a spine specialist. He did a laminectomy at l5 s1. I did great after that and was back at work full time by November. Then in March 2002 I fell and ended back at the spine specialist. That is when he did the fusion. From the day I fell until now I have lived with pain worse than anything I have ever felt in my life. I honestly would rather go through 10 hours of labor everyday and have a baby than feel the pain I do because of my back. The last doctor I saw said that there was nothing that could be done, but I don't buy that........I am going to see another doctor next week. I believe that eventually a doctor is going to find out why I have the pain in my leg, hip and abdomen. I also have no feeling in my left foot and pain in my back (feels like it is at my tail bone). As for the feeling of slipping or clicking in your back. I have that also. Sometimes it feels like bone grinding against bone also. If your not getting any better before may 2nd, it wouldn't hurt to call the doctor and let them know what is going on. Don't let it get worse by waiting.

I wish you all the luck and hope that things work out ok for you. Keep Smiling!!!

Tammy

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Thank You Tammy,
I thought I was the only one. But I honestly believe it has something to do with the Surgery or Fusion, I had the same Fusion as you, and we both have the same symptoms?
I pray this is not due to all this new Minumlly invasive surgery, and the Doc's not knowing enough about them, But my Surgeon is an Orthopedic AND a Neurosurgeon. He is very nice and polite. Lets see how polite he continues to be when I bug him until he checks it out and gives me an answer I can accept, Because I will not accept living like this.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Stardust,

sorry your having more problems.
Damn, you should not be in this much pain at 2 1/2 months out.

Is it possible that a disc fragment was missed? This is common and it's symptoms are what your describing
- maybe it is a pinched nerve, but something is pinching it.

Don't really know what to say, if it is this bad maybe your gonna have to be more assertive with the doc?

sorry - not much help here
just wanted to wish you luck.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hi Stardust
At FIRST glance this sounded somewhat similar to my story but I do not have any problem with the abdomen area but the other areas I do. But my story has not had a happy ending so far, but like I said it is different . Remember I had a fusion and all was great for 3 months then all the sudden the hip and thigh pain started and it was not what I had, had before. Unfort. things have not been better for me. Like you it has slowly gotten worse. The back pain is almost all gone but this is very bad . I have had every test and even surgery to find the cause. Then I had the stim trial and that was a big flop it recreated the back pain that I have been with out and my surgeon said he did not like that at all. Anyway, these were all new symptoms that came up a few months after surgery and now it is 10 months later and I am having a hard time making it through each work day and not much fun to live with , just ask my 3 kids and husband, I think they want a new mom..LOL I know ours stories our different but this post just caught my eye and I was like OH MY Why don't you call your doctory Monday and there is no reason to wait until May at this point just for your own peace of mind. i am also having another surgery in 6 weeks on another disc so I hope that takes away that pain. i do not remember signing up for this .....do you????? Take care Let me know how things go.....Oh by the way how are things with the lovely PM have you been able to sort out a way to see another doc ????

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Shelley,
I REFUSE to see another PM, Then my daughter (20yrs old) went to the same pharmacy (CVS) for her 2 year old son-to pick up his script for his antibiotic, THEY DID THE SAME THING TO HER!! They told her they would not fill it until they got the doctor's approval, yes it was a Friday night, my Grandson has had a long time 104 fever for his ears and needed his meds. But never got them until Monday, So she transfered to another CVS and doesn't have a problem, she used to work in the pharmacy when it was Eckerds, but had Toximia when she was pregnant and on bedrest for months.
My Grandson has a (sorry) Slimy Green pus pouring out of both ears and down his neck all the time and will be having his second surgery on April 29th, this time to remove the Adnoids and tonsils, it's a Childrens Specialty Hospital in Jacksonville, he will have to stay a few days after and I will have to take care of him for 2 weeks while she works, he won't be allowed back in Daycare until then.
And to NOT give him his meds, he suffered all weekend. I am so angry. My daughter is a single Mother and has the same last name as ours, that's the only thing I can figure out as to why they did that to him.

As for a past subject. My Diskogram in December showed a tiny tear and leak in the L4, I asked him to go ahead and fuse that at the same time, but he said no, since there was a 50/50 chance of it not getting any worse. I asked him if he could look at it during the surgery, but he told me he wouldn't be able to see it because he was doing the surgery Minumlly invasive.
I don't have any back pain, but wonder if the L4 is causing this and getting worse, or possibly a bone fragment.
I will be having him study the CT Scan with a microscope. It is only 2 weeks away and I still have pain meds, so I am going to try to hold on.
But it DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE!!!!
Yes, I agree. I signed up for pain relief, not more pain.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Yes, I DID ask him for an MRI, but he said it was too early and to wait until my next appt and he would have a CT Scan done, He told me a CT shows more clearly the holes where the nerves exit and he can see how large and even the holes are in the spine. But I will try to call his office and see if he can call me back and schedule something. He doesn't think I should be in any pain now and neither do I.
Is it true that a CT Scan is better than an MRI? What if it IS a bone fragment? How does that show up? I will be looking at the films as well and maybe I can spot something he isn't looking for.
Thanks,
StarDust
PS: He does the CT Scans in his office and they show up immediatly on his computer on the same visit.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hey Guys ,
I called and left a message with my Surgeon and it was a long one. I told them everything that is going on. Then left my phone Number and asked for a return call and any tests he thinks would help before my appt.
I'll let you know when I hear from him.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hi Guy's ,
I got a call back from my Surgeon within an hour, By that time I was in so much pain I don't know how he could understand me (I was crying THAT hard!) I don't know what happened all the sudden or if I did something. But my entire lower back, left hip, left leg, etc. Was in so much pain I wasn't able to move, seems walking makes it worse.
I thought If I drove to the store a mile down the road for something hubby wanted, it would be good to get out, but when I got to the store I had a hard time getting out of my car, but finally made it in the store. I was only there for 10 minutes and was wobbling as I walked, I was in THAT much pain. It took me 15 minutes trying to get back into my car, then got home and couldn't get out.
Finally Hubby helped me out, with me screaming in pain the whole time, got into the house and slept for 3 hours. Then I felt ok. Hubby was going to walk around the block and asked if I felt up to going with him. I wasn't hurting half as bad, so I went, but half way around the block it happened again. He helped me home and I've been on the sofa ever since.
I don't know why walking would make things worse, I thought it would be better for my back.
My Surgeon was kind enough to ask where I was, I told him I made it home. Otherwise he would send someone to help me home or to the ER. I told him the ER doesn't know anything, he agree'd and told me to be in his office by 8:30 in the morning.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hi Guy's ,
Well, I got to the Surgeon's Office at 8:15am, they were told when I got there to just bypass the sign-in and send me straight back for a few X-Rays. Then they took me to a room, The Doc came in almost immediatly and the X-rays were already on his computer. He looked at them and didn't see anything (or so he says), I told him about the Lower back, Left Thigh, Buttocks, & leg being very painful, and electric shocks going down to the foot, the Numbness and achy, stinging feelings that are painful traveling down the leg.

That when I sit forward for more than 5 minutes causes extreme pain and it's hard to sit back up straight and there's Burning pain through the mid back.

Walking causes pain to get ALOT worse till I can no longer walk due to severe pain in the left hip & Leg.
Also told him about the "clicking" feeling when I bend over sometimes in the area of the Surgery.

I asked how soon before I am out of Pain?

I said, I can't function due to pain, can't get in & out of my car, I am so tired of being in pain all the time.

I asked: What could be wrong? I'm doing everything I'm supposed too! And that I am worried if the Fusion is failing or loosening, a tiny bone fragment or Pinched Nerve?

For him to PLEASE HELP ME! I just want to go on & live life normally. I have no spasms anywhere & my back never goes out anymore.

I said: I'de rather have you do an Exploratory Surgery & check everything out than call every 2 weeks in Severe pain and live on Pain pills 24/7.

Anyway, I fell asleep at 5am and woke up at 7am to get ready for the appt.
He studied the X-rays, then did 1 leg movement and I screamed and began crying, holding the top of my leg. He asked where exactly it was hurting and watch my hands grabbing where it hurt. He tried 1 more simple one, just put his hand under my foot and ask me to try to keep his hand from lifting it, this time it was worse, I was crying so hard, I couldn't talk. Don't know why I bothered with Makeup this morning, I cryed it all off in minutes.

He told me not to worry, That he has had a few patients have the same problem and it's not that uncommon. He told me the Xrays didn't show a good enough view and to go next door for a CT Scan, He told me it's one of 2 things. Either the Nerve is irritated since the fusion goes in right next to it, Or the Nerve is pinched.

He gave me Pain meds and a new med out on the market taking Celebrex's place. If he see's something that need immediate attention on the CT, He will call me. Otherwise keep my May 3rd appt and see him then.

All this came from someone on 2 hours sleep and in severe pain, I had to be lifted onto the Scanned and lifted off it as well, I couldn't move on my own.

But if this is an irritated Nerve, then is it going to keep doing this? Or will it calm down eventually and stop? And if it turns out to be a pinched Nerve, How do they fix it?Thank's,
StarDust
PS. I just noticed this is my 4th post to MYSELF, is anyone out there?

StarDust

Just wanted to say I'm sorry what a miserable morning you had at the Dr's ofc. I do hope it's just an irritated nerve and it will calm down on it's own.

Which new med did he want you to try?

I know you want answer's, but here's hoping no news is good news and you don't hear from him til the 3rd!

Hope you get some much needed rest and that the new meds help your pain.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Thank You Bionic,
I was beginning to feel lonely on here , the last 4 posts were only from me. I can't pick up my meds from the Pharmacy till Tomorrow when I get some money, I'll let you know then, what this new Drug is.
Actually today was better than any other day, as, He got to see what was happening first hand.
I was completely pain free for awhile, then all this in the last 4 posts happened.

Re: Confused & need advice for post-op leg pain.

Hi there
You are not alone I am so sorry that you are having so much pain. i hope you were able to get you meds without a hassle. I wish I had a good answer for you, but things are bad for me too. I guess there is comfort in knowing that misery likes company...LOL Even with my New med that is suppose to be long acting I am still in such pain at around 4 pm that I wonder how life will ever be as far as seeing some kind of normal pattern to it again. I hate this as I am sure you do too. I hope you find something out.
Good luck to you.
