Unhappy Fusion and PT question?

Hello ALL
I have felt wonderful since my fusion(from the front with cadaver bone and a bracket)L5-S1........ January 14th. No pain at all. I went in at one month and was told to follow his instructions and that I would start PT at 3 months. Needless to say I was SHOCKED to go in yesterday and the X-ray looked great. He gave me the name of the PT and then had me get a CAT SCAN just to make sure it was fused as the X-ray showed. Dr. called last night and I am ONLY 65% fused and NO PT for another 3 months. I was devasted!! Is this normal? I have absolutly NO pain. He said to come back in 2 months for another check-up and he will reasses my pain..........I HAVE NONE.
Anyway, from what I have read and what I have seen 99% of people are in PT at 3 months...........Why not me???

Re: Fusion and PT question?

If he's looking to reassess you for pain that you don't have maybe he has you confused with someone else. I didn't have a cat scan but I started PT at three months, after a 3-level fusion.

Re: Fusion and PT question?

I just started PT this week for "pain control and strenth" at 4 months post fusion. I am NOT fusing and have loose hardware... but my surgeon is at a loss as to what else to do at this point. As long as my PT is gentle he okayed it (i'm in aqua now)... so wonder why your's said "no" to you???

Congrats on no pain tho, YIPPEE!! Its my understanding fusing can take up to 1 year so I would not worry about being "only" 65% - that sound wonderful at 3 months!!

I would recommend lots of walking and so forth (as you feel up to it) to keep up your strenth as you wait to begin PT.

Best wishes.

Re: Fusion and PT question?

It is SOOOOOOOOOOO frusterating..............especially when I thought that I would be in and our of PT and doing some fun things this summer. I am an AVID exerciser and I miss it so much!! I want back at the gym. I just do not undrstand why he told me 3 months then PT and now it is 5-6???

Re: Fusion and PT question?

DO NOT WORRY

IF your 65% @ 3mo your doing awesome!

could take up to a year or more to fuse 100% solid

and every Dr is different perhaps he just wants you not to put any stress on things just yet.
