still nervous after surgery

I have posted before about my son's April 14th 2 level lumbar fusion. He still has the right leg pain and I am very concerned about this since it was his left leg that he had the surgery for (which is fine). He will see the doctor Monday in Philly to removes the staples. I hope to hell this goes away. I know a few on this board said that he should not have right leg pain like that after the surgery. The office says that there is inflammation and that is probably what is causing it. Has anyone else had inflammation that has caused pain in the good leg after the surgery. He is so upset. Sometimes it's better than at other times. He can walk albeit in pain. They are going to do a CT scan.

Any suggestions of what might be causing this? Also, what questions should I be asking other than the bvious, "What's causing this?"

I keep hoping someone will write in and say this has happened to them and it finally went away. He's 9 days post op.

Thank you everyone for your help.

Bobi

Re: still nervous after surgery

Hi!
I had a 2 level 360 degree fusion on March 4th, my pain prior to surgery was on the left side also, and after surgery, I began to have right leg pain too! When I called my OSS and asked, he said that when he went in to repair the left side, there was significant right side nerve damage too so he took care of that while he was operating. He said the nerves on the right were so accustomed to being compressed that when he fixed them, they began "jumping for joy" . Anyway, he said it would get better with time, and it has, thank God!!! The pain I am having now is in both legs and especially my toes, which is a burning pain that the Dr. said is nerve pain. He has started me on Neurontin , and it has helped tremendously! So don't worry, the pain should begin to get better soon. I actually Had my first pain-free day yesterday and it felt wonderful!!! Hope this helps, and if you have more questions just ask, OK?

Re: still nervous after surgery

Bobbi,
Surgery does increase swelling, and this may cause his new kind of pain. I got right thigh pain after my fusion, and my problem was left leg pain and foot drop. It did go away. Recovery was slow and difficult, but things did get so much better!!!!! Mary
