Angry 25/female with Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis and other."Sorely" need advice on treatment

Hello, thanks for taking the time to read this people.(This is about 5 paragraphs long, just to let you know) Its more than some doctors would do. I am a 25/F and I have had MRI's and xrays done on my back. I was diagnosed with severe sciatica, spinal stenosis and other things I do not remember the technical names of. That was in the summer of 2003 and I have been suffering from pain since i was 13. It has gradually gotten worse and by teh time I was 18 I was having spasms from hell. The kind that woudl arise out of nowhere and keep me from moving a muscle. When i get these I have literally had to drag myself everywhere. A coupel times i was floor ridden for 2 weeks before it subsided enough for me to move. Its the most excruciating electrical pain I have ever felt in my life and i never know when it will come on. I have held in my urine bc i was deathly frightened of teh pain i would endure on the toilet, just sitting down!

So i talked to a neurologist a couple of years ago, teh one who sent me for xrays, and mri's and he basically todl me i had a severe condition and teh only thing he can think to do is give me cortisone shot and or surgery if needed. I am 25 ! Holy F***. Well, i was with a place called vocation rehab at the time which promised they would pay for a cortisone shot or surgery as i cannot afford it and i have no insurance, and then the lovely people backed out on me.

I was 23 then , i am now going to be 26 and i experience back pain like you wouldnt beleive which radiates all the way down my legs to my toes. It really makes it hard to live with and i can barely sit or stand for 15 min. I have to keep resituating myself or stand up , i just do intervals of both and i look like im antsy and cant sit still. But what else can i do ?? So, Its gotten to the point where i am actually becoming accustomed to this pain but it has ripped thorugh me emotionally and I think it may have spread through my whole body bc every part of it aches now and cracks . I bet i have arthritis as well, Its not common in people my age but it does happen, i mean its not rare.
Another doctor I went to recently was an ortheopedic and he took a look at my xrays and told me that he was surprised i wasnt in a car accident bc i had what looked like injuries more than conditions. I also had the xrays of an old person. Thats comforting to know. You know what he suggested when i asked him if i could get a cortisone shot? ( I got a new counselour at voc rehab, and she said she would help me get the cortisone shot through another doctor) This doctor said that he didnt reccomend it and that iw as too young and he wouldnt do t to his own daughter. He told me to build up my muscles , my abs to strenghten my back and do swimming exercisies. I am in tears as i type this bc that is something i cant do. I hurt too much to even do that, all over my body.

So my question is, who can i go to get the help i need, Where can i turn? Can i possibly get SSI for this. I am not to the point where i cant walk but its very difficult to do everyday things. I just want to feel better and normal at this age and i cant. I wake up in the morning feeling like someone has beat me to a bloody pulp, liek teh way you feel when you have teh flu , but worse. Sore all over my body , every inch. It hurts to even move my arms and i crack a lot. My neck is the worst. Its very stiff and everything is just always cracking or crackling. I think that is a sure sign of arthritis . I cant afford a chiro so thats out of teh question until i get a fulltime job with benefits. Im not even in a job right now, i just go to school(finishing up my medical secretarial certificate) but i am looking for work and im so scared i wont be able to function and they will fire me b/c of my condition. What can i do for myself? Massages? Physical therapy? Shoudl i demand treatment from this place that supposedly helps with dissabilities. If i was accepted for this condition, its obviously a dissability right? Any help would be greatly appreciated beyond comprehension. Thank you for listening.

Surgery if needed? Do you remember what he was recommending? I have also been told I have Spinal Stenosis as part of my issues. I've already had 3 back surgeries and am only 33. (The Stenosis was not the main reason for the surgeries) My problems began in January 2001 when I had a really bad fall. I was only 29. It might help you greatly to gather up your records so that you can see, first hand, what the diagnoses were. Then you would have the information needed to begin researching what to do next.

This makes me crazy. I suffered for over 2 years with a diseased gall bladder because my Gastroenterologist couldn't believe that someone my age had such a condition. I wish medical professionals would realize we aren't all cut from the same cookie cutter. Aaaaaahhhhh!
Just so you know, I do the very same thing. My husband calls me a jumping bean. The pain gets so bad I can't sit still. Sitting is the worst thing for me. Standing is the next worst. It used to be that I could lay down for relief but now, I don't even have that. Sleep at night has become a challenge.
PT can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your particular problem. My recent PT has made me worse but that's not always the case. You won't know until you try. Just be careful because it, too, can be expensive. You will probably have to try some conservative treatments before going any further. You never know, you may hit one that brings you all kinds of relief! I wish you well and hope you are able to find the answers you need soon...

Re: 25/female with Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis and other."Sorely" need advice on treatment

my first question is, can you work? it doesn't sound like you can. you might be able to collect disability from ssa if you qualify.

i'm 5 years post accident, and i have sciatica (muscle pinching, not disc), si joint pain, and an annular tear.

can you "cull out" the diagnoses in more detail? you do sound like you've been in a serious accident or have a major condition, like ankylosing spondilitis (sp?) or even a fibro-like problem.

what did the ortho say about what you have? i have to agree with the steroid issue, only b/c too many shots can increase your bone and muscle loss. you've got enough!

i get the following done to keep me going: massages, stretches, & tennis balls for the sciatica (b/c it's the piriformis), medication for it & the si joint, and i had a non-op done last summer for the tear. if you're looking for alternative medicine, i would try whatever you can (chondroitin or other minerals, accupuncture, massages, whatever), but i would AVOID chiro!!!! because your problems are so extensive & may not be all id'd yet, please stay away from chiropracters for now. you sound like you crack enough as it is!

sorry i'm not giving you more, but will be happy to if you have any evals that you can type in to give me a better idea what's going on.

take care!!! please keep me posted...i think i can help a bit.

Re: 25/female with Sciatica, Spinal Stenosis and other."Sorely" need advice on treatment

Abrie,

This is an awful lot to deal with. The desperation in your writing tells me that you need some help coping with all of this. Please see a psychologist that helps individuals with chronic pain. I'm not saying that your pain comes from your head but pain does affect how we think, feel and react. He/She can also help significantly with the disability issues.
