My Status Update

I have been posting here and there and realize that I have not really given a status update for quite awhile... maybe somebody has some words of wisdom?? Mostly I am SO FRUSTRATED...

I had a TLIF fusion w/ bmp L4-5 and a Lami L3 on 12/14/04 (after the usual ESI rounds and PT and rest/ice, anti-inflams etc). My dx was stenosis, ddd and herniation at L4-5 protruting into the nerve. I posted alot back right before and after my surgery.

Surgery went well, I recovered resonably fast, and went back to my desk job at 6 weeks. Pain from surgery went away pretty quick, but my back and leg pain has remained at about a 4-5. My x-rays however have shown virtually NO fusion, and a loose screw (my hubby thinks the fact I have a "screw loose" is very funny ). At about 12 weeks I started hurting worse ... right leg, right hip (very bad!!) and back (at fusion site and slightly above) 6-7 ish. Pain has increased since then steadily. 3 weeks ago I was doing laundery and did "something" (pulling heavy load of towels out) that resulted in pain so bad I couldn't walk. Also developed numbness (like hitting funny bone) down right leg (hip to toes) and on left foot. That now comes and goes. Pain lives at about a 7-8. Anyone else have horrible hip pain? That is my worst issue, also I walk like a 90 year old because standing upright HURTS.

My surgeon had me on Oxycontin 20 mg 2x day before surgery. after surgery at about 8 weeks he dropped it to 10 mg 2 x day with Vicodin 5/500 as breakthrough. He refuses to increase the dose and I have to fight for refills (went 4 days this month without anything). I am NOT a drug addict.

Wow this is getting long.

He doesn't want to do a new MRI, or anything .. just keeps telling me it "takes time to heal" (but should I be getting worse???) I finally begged and started aqua therapy 2 weeks ago (and go 2 x week, and it hurts SO bad, but I'm hoping it'll help in long run???) I also begged to see a Pain Management dr after the latest fight over my prescription and he refered me to his buddy (who did the esi shots) so i'm sure this guy is already warned about me being a "drug addict" . BTW, I've offered to take a drug test, and have offered to bring in my pill bottle to let him count the Oxy so he could count them mid-month... UGH!!

SO- That is my update... Thanks for "listening"...

The moral of my story is this: The doctor was NOT certified, not a spine specialist or anything... I chose him because he was closest to my house... DO NOT DO THAT - check out the dr's credentials!! I can't get another doctor to touch me until its been at least 6-9 months post-op!!

Re: My Status Update

Hi Michelle
Well when do you see the PM doc? I hope you are wrong and they are not "together" on this that would be the total pits but ot seems like he is keeping you in his own circle Do you have to have a ref. from him for a PM doc or could your regular doc give you a name if this one is not on the up and up? Well never mind....this doc will surely give you the relief you are looking for. Good luck.

Re: My Status Update

Michelle
It amazes me how some docs choose to live in Fairytale Land and ignore reality when it comes to SOMEONE ELSE's body! Sounds like a Neuro with a spine specialty needs to give you a look. Stop beating yourself up about your choice. I do admire that you posted the mistake here to warn others before they choose.
FYI....I had Fusion/Laminotomy (L4-5) in 8/03. By 2/04, I was still in misery and was being told there was nothing showing up on the films and nothing wrong. I knew what I was feeling was not nothing..not even close. I then took the SAME films to a Neurosurgeon who, immediately, spotted a problem. He had a discogram done and it confirmed that not only had L4-5 blown back out but L5-S1 was blown out, too. My advice, if your body is screaming there's a problem, listen to it. Docs are human and they can miss things. Take your films and seek advice until someone finds what's wrong. Good luck!

Re: My Status Update

Thanks for your replies.

I see my rheumatologist today and will explain the horrid hip pain to her today (I also have Rheumatoid arthritis)... maybe she'll do a MRI?? I think the aqua therapy is making things worse, not better, and i'd love a new MRI to see what the heck is going on in there. My Rheum is great. I don't want meds from her (heaven forbid I get meds from more then 1 doctor ). Maybe she can give me a referal to both a new back doctor and a pain doctor.. And trust me - if I get one WHIF that the pain dr that the surgeon sent me to is "in it" with him I will leave. I have had enough.

When I went to p/u my prescription FINALLY Tuesday they grudgingly gave me 10 oxycontin 10mg to last Mon-Friday (because "the PM dr will take care of meds after that" -- I got side swiped by another car in the parking lot (barely a bump) -other car's fault - they had no insurance, and on private property no so police . The nurse called yesterday to say that she saw my "CRASH" and maybe "I shouldn't be driving if I have so much medicine in my system" (Umm, id been out for 4 days!!!) - If anything, I was distracted by PAIN, but again HE HIT ME!! I haaaatttteeee her!! I am so tired of being labled a junkie. She knew I had no meds, She was the one who made a point of telling me I couldn't have them until 4 days after I was out!!! Where did she think I was getting them? The street corner?? And its not like the stupid 10 mg do much to stop my pain anyways. I was so mad/sad/upset, I couldn't stop crying.

Thanks for letting me vent.
