As jaydar said, there isn't much room.
That, and the fact that the "hole" that the nerve comes out of is not just filled with the nerve. It is filled with fat, blood vessels, and other components. If you have ever seen the inside of the human body, everything has its place and is so organized and built so well that to ream it out would be like taking a drill to your ear. You would certainly make a larger hole, but the results probably wouldn't be the best!
