mri results..and i am mad

Hello again
I am so mad, hurt, and in alot of pain..........i have a buldge at L5/S1. I went in to see the np.....she treated me like i was a junkie. This is the 1st time that i have met her.......i have seen Dr k for more then a year, and he had had me on vicodin es since the first visit......i have this strange pain that goes around my side...was told that it was shingles (3 years ago). I have had xrays, ct scans, blood work....all normal. So by now i have built up a tolerance to the pain meds.....so when this happened...yes i took more to control it. After a year my toes went numb, i have told him at EVERY visit that the sciatic pain was bad. His np (he was not there...she would not refill any meds....not even offer any nsaids, ultrams...nothing she said that i needed pt)..I feel like he has been jacking me around for a year...why not an mri earlier...why not pt earlier??? I DO NOT like being on these drugs.
OK back to the mri...no ddd...or any hernation. Whats the difference between a buldge and herniation....is a buldge a hernation waiting to happen??? Did this mri tell the whole storey????? Am I addicted to vicodin and if so how do i get off of them?????? I am almost out.....isnt it dangerous to suddenly stop these???????
She acted like it was a hang nail. I was questioning her as to why the pain is SO bad at night (sorry, but i have been up since 2 am...pain woke me) She said, the pain is bad because everything hurts more at night. Does this make any since to anyone ...once the sun sets, do the pain monsters come out??? Should I hang garlic around my doors????
OK....am i making a bigger deal out of this then it needs to be?? I have an appt next week to see DR k....i think i am going to keep it....he has always been nice and kind and understanding. She made me feel like a low life. One part of the mri i didnt understand was :Midline soft tissue edema in the superficial subcutaneous tissues of L1 thru L4 (something i cant read) levels. Does this just mean i am fat?????
I have a number to a spine dr i am calling in the am to get an appointment.
I have had to take a leave of abscence from work because of this.
Thanks for listening to me....sorry for the sarcasm.....and temper tantrum.

Unfortunately, this has become the norm for a lot of chronic pain sufferers. You are not alone!

I DO NOT like being on these drugs.
I've said those very words to my PM. He then offered Oxycontin which I promptly turned down. It's so hard to be taking meds for sanity, to keep from putting your fist through a wall. You are not alone.

Regarding the pain at night, I have asked about that numerous times and no one can give me an answer that makes sense. It seems like once the sun goes down I start pacing worse and can't get my pain in check.

A VERY good idea. Get another set of eyes to see you and another set of ears to hear you. I have learned that docs are human, though we sometimes forget that, and they make mistakes. As the patient and the one suffering, you owe it to yourself to get good information and learn what you can do next. Best of luck to you. This process is rarely quick but you will come out stronger when you are done. Hang in there!

Re: mri results..and i am mad

I'm glad that you have an appointment with a spine specialist...you need someone with experience. You asked if a bulging disc is a herniation waiting to happen; generally speaking, yes. At least, you are ripe for herniation. Someone used this analogy on another board, and I am going to borrow it.
Picture an ice cream sandwich; you bite down and some of it squishes out, right? That's your bulging disc. Now, you take another couple of bites and that squish drops into your lap. That's your herniation.

As for the midline soft tissue edema...I'm not sure what they are talking about. The edema is referring to swelling and that's all I can tell you.

Please don't apologize for venting or whatever...you needed to get that off your chest and we are here to listen. I know how much better I feel when I blow off steam so feel free any time.

I hope your appointment is successful; that you like the doctor and that he is able to help you.

Carol

nean
You're welcome. I know that edema is swelling or inflammation and unless I remember wrong, it's usually from fluid build-up. Regarding the midline soft tissue terminology, I have no clue. From my own experience, I can attest that swelling/inflammation of any kind can be very painful. Our bodies just aren't made to handle intrusions into any of its' spaces. I hope you have your answers soon. Regarding the humilation, dont' beat yourself up. The PMs I've recently encountered are very hard to deal with and so beat up my "drug seekers" that it's hard for them, in my opinion, to distinguish between the real, chronic pain sufferers from the addicts. Our problems are so intertwined that I guess I see how that can happen. Not that I agree with how some of us get treated because I absolutely DO NOT! I am tired of constantly having to explain myself, having to bring meds to appointments to show them I'm not abusing my meds, worrying because I'm scared to death I'll be "labelled". Again, this isn't easy. You are strong though. Just hang in there and post here when you have to...no matter how much. We are all dealing with some rough issues and we need each other to keep going. I don't know why it helps to know others know what you're going through but it does help. Ask anything you need to. If I miss your post, there are plenty others who I'm sure will gladly respond....

I get myself so "spun up", that nothing shuts me down...its a cycle ...pain..muscles tighten..more pain....more spasms....i am treating my vicodins as if they are the absolute LAST thing i can take....gotta make them last.

Re: mri results..and i am mad

I can most definitely relate to the cycle you go through. The gnawing pain may not be at the intensity a doctor would like before they prescribe medication but the mere consistency of the pain is what disables a chronic pain sufferer like you and I. It's always there and it consumes us. If narcotics are prescribed to a point where a dependency occurs then so be it. I say, let's get the pain under control and find out what is causing it. We can treat the addiction when the pain is no longer there. Some doctors may think they are doing a favour keeping us from a potentially addicting medication but they sure make us pay h*ll for it.

Re: mri results..and i am mad

dezispec,

Hello,
I am off all narcs.....mixing tylenol and advil 3 of each every 3 hours. I dont even look to see how much i should take....at this point....i will do what ever it takes to get some relief......
I have an appt with spine dr Monday....
I am about 5' 1" and 130 lbs......and flat chested.....my husband said last night that maybe breast reduction would help my back.....nice huh? I was also left to unload 2 five gallon buckets of paint from the truck along with dog food, cat litter, cases of pop, beer etc...it was starting to rain, and it wasnt my truck, so i couldnt just "wait" for him. I am going to beg dr for surgery, "just do it".....because to me, its just a matter of time before the bulge herniates. Does this make any sense??
thanks for listening

nean

take care

Re: mri results..and i am mad

Hi ,
I'm so sorry to here your in so much pain. As for:

Midline soft tissue edema in the superficial subcutaneous tissues of L1 thru L4 (something i cant read) levels. Does this just mean i am fat?????

Right there tells me the Edema (swelling is in or around the disks), not fat. My Son has shingles, what Visible symptoms do you have? He has Clear fluid filled clusters of large blisters that come & go. Look in a Medical book that shows pictures of skin rashes, etc, or go online.
If you've never had these painful clusters of large blisters, It might be a Mis-Diagnosis.
I FIRED my PM Doc and never felt better.
Good luck to you,
Stardust

Re: mri results..and i am mad

i never did develope any type of skin rash, dr thought it was shingles, i still have the wrapping pain around my back that goes to my ribs..xrays showed some arthritits. 2nd opinion thought it might be plursea...chest rads normal. All blood work normal, U/S abdomen to r/o kidney stones..normal. Ct scan of Abdomen w &w/o contrast normal..urine test normal. Acupuncturist said it was costochroditis.
Thanks, i will check out shingles.....i did check on it when it was first brought up.

Re: mri results..and i am mad

It really doesn't sound like Shingles. But I really don't know what the other words are.

I have to wonder at some Docs. I take Nitrogycerin for Esophageal spasms, yet I looked THAT up and don't have a single Symptom, Yet I just found out my oldest Brother had a mild heart attack when he was 1 year younger than I am now (44). Now THAT makes sense and all the symptoms are there.
I hope your find out what it is soon and are out of pain.
Stardust
I need to be re-evaluated as well.

Re: mri results..and i am mad

I'm Sorry, I think I gave you the wrong Idea. I am the one who has the symptoms of the Heart Problems. My Brother had the mild heart attack 1 year younger than me.
So Sometimes doctors guess, I have had a few of them not know what was going on and just guessed.
I Pray that they find out what is really causing your pain. Someone out there knows, just gotta find the right Doc who will check everything out.
