Question Back pain years after spinal fusion

I am now 22 years old. When I was 15 I had a lumbar spinal fusion done on the top half of my back. They said the bottom curve really should have been done as well but being so young they would like to let me have as much movement as possible and they would just continue to watch it.

Everything went well with the surgery. I didn't even have to go into ICU. I wasn't cleared to do all activities until 3 years later, however they cleared me for certain things along the way.

Yesterday while sitting at work my back started to hurt. I went to rub it and noticed a bump near the base of where my spine was fused. It feels very similar to where I can feel one of the screws, but larger. The pain wasn't too bad so I just went home to sleep on it. I haven't done anything out of the ordinary to cause pain.

I woke up this morning in a lot more pain. My right hip (where they did the bone graph) is hurting a lot. It is very uncomfortable to sit or stand. My lower back in general feels very tense and just has a dull pain to it.

I called and made an appointment with my surgeon to have it looked at but the soonest they can see me is next Thursday.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this so many years after their surgery? And if so, what did they do about it??

Thanks very much!
April

Question Re: Back pain years after spinal fusion

I had a fusion many years ago and do experince bouts of pain at different times. However mine was purely a bone fusion without equipment. I would suggest you consult your GP/specialist to determine what is happening.I have learnt over the years that it is better to be proactive and address probs as they arise rather than to sit back and wait to see what happens. I hope for your sake all is Ok and its just one of those hickups that post surgical patients like ourselves experience from time to time

Good luck
