What does it feel like when feeling comes back??

I have been reading these boards periodically since my microdiscectomy surgery at L5/S1 four months ago.
Although my back is feeling much better, and I am getting stronger every day, I have noticed NO change in my numb leg. It was numb to the knee before the surgery, and immediately after the surgery it was numb to my toes. It is still weak, and I cannot really put weight on it. I can't flex my calf muscles or my glutes -- in fact it looks like 1/2 of my butt is sagging (or maybe I'm paranoid about that part). In any case, it's all still the same.

Anyway, my doc has given me the go-ahead to head back to work and I am trying to reconcile myself to the fact that my leg might always feel like this. But I desperately still want it to get better, so...what would some good signs be? Has anyone had feeling come back into a numb area after nerve damage? Did anything precede it, like tingling, burning, etc.?

In short, is there anything I can look forward to as a positive sign that my nerve is healing and I might someday get the feeling/ strength back? Please be brutally honest. It's been four months without a sign...so maybe there will be no sign.

- M

I haven't experienced this; have read others say they had some tingling like needles and pins.

Good luck; both with work and with getting the feeling back in your leg.

Re: What does it feel like when feeling comes back??

I am 14 months post fusion surgery. My right foot/ankle and calf is numb with spots on the upper leg of numbness. It's better than it was in the beginning, but I too, have resolved myself to the fact that it might never be better. One thing I did notice is that after being in the hospital (for something unrelated) It got tremendously better. I was on prednisone and an antibiotic that made me pee a ton. I have noticed that when I get the fluid out of there, it moves at least or more 50% better. I also get sharp shooting jolts that go through it. These are horrendous and haven't gone away.

My movement got better after I went back to work. The numbness is still there but I guess I've gotten used to it.

Don't know if any of this helps or not but thought I'd share.

Re: What does it feel like when feeling comes back??

I had a 2 level 360 fusion 4 months ago. When I woke up from my surgery my toes were numb (they were not numb before my surgery) About a month later, the numbness turned to horrible burning.....worse than anything you could imagine. I had more epidurals and I was on Neurontin (very high does). After about a month, my nerve thankfully settled down. I still have some buring here and there, but nothing I cant stand.

So, I think when your nerve does start to come back, you will definately feel something. I pray for you, not the burning. Has your doctor done an MRI to see what is compressing your nerve? Maybe you should get some more opinions.

Good Luck.

Bella
