11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Well its been 11 days now since my surgery and I have 2 week follow on Wednesday morning with Spine Dr. for Microdiscectomy on l5 S1. As stated in prev post the surgeon found a piece of disc pressing up against the nerve. Before I had Surgery I did not have numbness, tingling or foot drop as many posters did. I had bad pain like a hunchback when I got up from sitting for about 10 minutes until it subsided. No where near as bad as what I have read about here on this site.

My questions for Dr I wanted to post here too as I am still frustrated since I still get a post surgery pain along the Sciatic ( I Posted about before) that is deep in rear end and radiates to hamstring and calf and sometimes causes my heal to go numb. This is not constant Ė itís only when I sit and put pressure on it or if I shimmy when laying down or roll onto side. Thatís the way I discovered it. It only lasts like 2 minutes or so them I have some residual pain down leg for about 30 minutes. I guess itís a cramp. I am getting depressed as I am getting cabin fever and all I do is lay down or go for a walk. No pain when doing either. Incision pain is totally gone. Back feels good. Only issue is that DARN Cramping thingy. It hurts so bad that I scream and sadly cry. I am an avid mixed Martial Artist and have had some pretty good hits to the face and body and thatís nothing compared to this! Anyway here are my questions for Dr.

1. When are these cramp things going to subside as I already took a Medro Steroid pack and still get them? Also Ė why didnít you tell me this was a possibility Ė I might not have chosen to do surgery as I was able to completely function before.
2. When will I be able to sit? Now I am stuck in bed or up in feet walking.
3. Did you take any preventative measures about Scar tissue. I worry that could happen and cause me even more issues.
4. What does my disc look like? Will I need more surgeries in future or was this a one timer hopefully?
5. How degenerated are other discs?
6. What did you find when you were in there
7. What physical activities can I do in future

Let me know if you all know any others I should ask or If you have answers to above already.

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

hello there, I'm in the same boat as you. You described the same pains I have had since surgery. I had a microdiscectomy on September 1st and still have all those wonderful pains. My spine specialist said it would take a long time to heal since the nerve was pinched for 2 years and there was such a large herniation. PT guy tells me that my nerve is still rubbing up against bones on my spine but I find that hard to believe. People on this forum have also felt this pain and I have read that its nerve pain and takes a while to subside. I don't know what to believe anymore! I understand what you're going through though.

PJB6282 - Did you have same issue where you could not sit or got pain when rolling on side. If so - how long till you were able to sit or drive? If I could do that I would be happy.

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

I had a microdiscectomy about 6 months ago. You say it has only been 11 days. I still had quite a bit of pain at that point. I complained to the surgeon at my two week post op check and he said if it did not get better in a few months to come back to see him. Well at 3 months I felt a lot better. I would say it took about two months to feel good again. I still have mild pains sometimes but at six months I still notice it gets better all of the time. I didn't have to take any pain medication after about 3 months. So it does take some time for the nerve to heal. I hear it can take up to a year and a half. As far as having to have another surgery again I think it depends on how you take care of yourself. Once a disc has been damaged like that it will always be weaker and you'll have to be careful for the rest of your life is what I have been told. Just remember it has not been very long at all since your surgery and you only get one chance to heal properly so I know it's hard to lay around all of the time I have been there. I still had extreme pain in my foot after 11 days. It does get better. It just takes a little more time. Try to be patient. You'll want to ask your doctor about what to do to help with scar tissue. I did not have a problem with this and most people don't actually. It's really the horror stories that are posted on here. All of the people who got better like me don't really post on here anymore. I check in every once in a while and only respond to others who are going through the same thing I did so I can help them.

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

shokatsu: I could sit for about 1/2 hour 3 weeks after surgery. I still have pain whenever I sit or stand for longer then 45 minutes. It's not as bad as before surgery but I still worry a lot whether its going to go away. After 8 weeks of laying on my back all day and my supervisor calling asking when I was going to return to work I returned to work. I started doing 4 hour days 3 days a week and continue to do so. I get pain like a pulled hamstring feeling after about an hour into work. I also get this pain whenever rolling onto my side. The only time I'm painless is when I'm laying on my back for about 2 hours and haven't moved much. I drove 3 weeks after surgery because I had a job interview but I wouldn't recommend driving until 6 weeks after surgery. It took a toll on me when I decided to drive 3 weeks after surgery. I started PT 4 weeks after surgery and continue to go 2 times per week. PT says he wants to continue until I"m painfree. My insurance runs out 12/31 though and I have no idea what I'm going to do. I can't work full-time because I'm in too much pain sitting. I'm just hoping I magically heal by 12/31.

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Well I had the 2 week follow up today and it went pretty well. I was actually able to sit in car for 15 minute drive to Dr with no issues. I was scared I would get that pain but I was ok. Once at the DR they let me have a room so I could lay down and that was nice. Dr had some pretty good things to say. He said my incision looks great and that I am a fast healer. Gave me ok to take long hot showers! Thank GOD! As for my pains he said that reason is that during surgery when he removed the piece of disc some more blew out and he removed quite a bit from that space. He stated now that area is unstable and is causing the pressure on the nerve and needs to compress which should take a couple more weeks. He gave me a prescription for nuronotin or something like that if need it. I donít think I do since I can avoid the pain. As for another MRI he tested my reflexes and my sensitivity and said its all good an no need for MRI Ė He was able to bend my leg straight and up with zero pain. Wants to see me again in 3 weeks. I have to say my back was so sore after I got home. It was like I worked out all day. I even slept for an hour. I feel sooo old.

Anyway thatís the update at day 13. Hopefully I will get better and better and bet my butt back to work!

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Brian,

Did you say you had very little leg pain pre-op?

I have L5-S1 herniation with very little leg pain but bad back pain. My Dr. said there was NOTHING he would do for me until I couldn't walk because of the pain, and that a microdiscectomy was not very effective for my kind of problem (centralized in the back)

Once he decided there was no surgery to be done, he shook my hand and said "good luck!!"

I am so frustrated with the lack of a clear diagnosis and treatment schedule (my 1st Doc recommended artificial disk! second scoffed at the idea)

Please keep us informed of your progress. BTW where did you go for surgery?

Kelly

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

no - Pre surgery thats all I had. I could not bend my leg out at all. When Sitting I would get pain in rear and in calf. When I stood up it would be sharp stabbing pain until I walked it off. I used Mckinzy excercises to relieve it when I could but twards the end I could not relieve it any more and had surgery. I never had back pain. The Dr told me that if I had back pain only this wouldnt work, but since it was only in the leg it would fix it. The problem is I didn not know I would have severe pain in Sciatic afterwards if I moved, which he explained to me is because the are now needs to settle and scar over and that the nerver still needs a few more weeks to calm down.

Best of luck on your back.

Brian

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Hi,

I'm new to this site and had a Microdiscetomy on 12 days ago. How do I make a post so I can get on board with you guys. I don't know how I am doing. When I wake up I have huge cramping in my calf. I do walk out if it alittle. I can stand longer than before the surgery and also sit. I go for my 2 week checkup on Tuesday December 11.

Thanks.

On the upper left if you are in the back problems board where you can see all of the different subjects there is a tab that says NEW THREAD. Click on that to start a new one but you have to make sure you are logged in or that tab won't be there.

Also this close to your surgery you shouldn't be trying to sit longer. I was limited to sitting for 5 minutes until I went in for my two week post op and then the surgeon can instruct you at that time how long it's safe to sit.

Sounds like you are doing good though. I had my calf tighten up on me for many months after my surgery. It just takes time to heal. For me it really took a year to feel really good again.

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Hey Shokatsu and pjb6282,

You two are still very very fresh out of surgery and your docs are right; it's going to take a while for your surgery sites to heal up and for everything to settle down. Nerve damage can take a very long time to heal (as in many months). So it is not uncommon for a nerve that has been abused to have residual pain and flare-ups for a while.

The cramps are a tough one to diagnose - remember that the nerve runs right through all of thosse muscles and a lot of times it feels like a cramp but it's really nerve pain. A pain deep in the buttock, especially in the knot about an inch or two from the tailbone sounds like nerve pain, but the good news is that your pains are short duration. Do they go away completely? If so I would think that that's good.

Hopefully, shokatsu, yours will do the trick for you. My micro-D at L5/S1 failed and I had to do a fusion. But I had additional problems besides the disc (I had a spondylolisthesis, too).

Give it some time. it is too early yet to know how it's going. just do what your doctor says and keep to your activity and medication schedule and hopefully you'll see some noticeable improvement in a matter of weeks.

Take it easy,
David

Re: 11 days Post Op Microdiscetomy - 2 Week Follow up

Hi, I am 2 years post-op Microdiscectomy. My first week, I crept about wondering what was going to happen if I actually bent down or did something. I did have residual pain on the nerve which came and went. I was back to work after 12 days, but not allowed to sit for too long. I was also driving the car.

I have had sessions of pain since then, which went away again and I do find I can't stand for very long, as I get in pain, which goes away if I walk.

Today, I have pain on the other side (mentioned in another thread) and seeing my physio this evening to see what he thinks. He is brilliant and was the first to tell me he couldn't help, that I needed a neurosurgeon. This current problem may be something completely different.

So all I'm saying is, you will have all kinds of different pains, twinges, etc. You are very early into recovery.

Jean
