After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

Sorry for the stupid question..

I am 1 week post-op lumbar spinal fusion at L4 L5...

My question is:

how do you wipe your butt after a spinal fusion if you are not supposed to twist ?

Thanks

All I can say is very carefully. At least you got the opportunity to go after one week. I couldnt go for 13 days. Be glad your a male. I had my monthly visit day after fusion and had to contend with that instead of my butt.lol. Im 8 weeks post op L4-S1. Good-Luck

Wink Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

2 ideas I was given after my fusion were these:

1. Use a set of tongs to hold the tissue. (it will lengthen you arm basiclly, so you dont twist as much.

2. If you are still having problems with that, try going from the front and wiping backwards. (You can also use the tongs from the front).

I hope you are recovering well,

Lorie

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

My mom stayed with me for 1 month after my L4-S1 fusion and she had to clean me so that I would not twist.

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

You know it was a good question. I don't even remember what I did because it was so long ago and I was on a bedpan for 10 days with the nurses looking after me. It is a good practical question.

Backing into the towell....LMAO

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

BABY WIPES! I cannot emphasize this enough! And, as gross as it sounds, try wiping while lying down on your side. Seems to me that I can get more leverage that way.

If all else fails, and you have a step-in shower stall, have a hand-held shower head installed and you can use it as a sitz-bath to clean yourself.

This is a good idea for females having their monthlies post-surgery.

When I had my fusion, I was told I couldn't shower for a week after I got home. Just my luck, I wasn't even home a week before I was hospitalized with a staph infection of the surgical wound and couldn't shower for another 12 weeks after that because I had a PICC line in my arm and couldn't get it wet! But I could still used the hand-held shower below the waist, as long as I didn't get the dressings wet.

You can bet I was one stinky girl! If it hadn't been for my mom taking me to the hair salon to have my hair washed twice a week, I would have died from sheer nastiness.

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

seriously - you guys - is it really this bad? I'm getting ready to have two level fusion and I'm a single mom. My mom is going to stay while I'm in the hospital but after that I'm home with two teenage sons and a preteen daughter.

Am I being delusional thinking I can handle this on my own? Please be honest with me.

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

Hi MKF,
Trust me it's not as bad as it appears, I have had 4 fusions in the last 3 yrs. Although it's not a picnic, we all find our own way around these things. I had a hard brace after my last surgeries, it was very difficult until I found that I was aloowed to remove it to potty. The most important thing is to ASK all of these kind of questions BEFORE you leave the hospital. The therapists there have all kinds of neat lil tricks that help so much with daily living. I to have two teens (boys) although they did help alot they couldn't help with this subject. I did have my mom with me when I would have been alone the first week, but other than that it really isn't the worst thing in the world.

Good luck and God Bless.

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

Jbravo,

It is managable. I had fusion at L4-L5 3 weeks tomorrow. Make use of stretching your arms and reach to minimize the bend/twist (which is minimal for most). You will be fine.
I have had no problems. Good luck.

Re: After Fusion Question - How do you wipe your butt?

OMG this brings back memories ( bad ones ) I went to the bathroom and tried to wipe , but it hurt my back to bad to twist , I tried everything , putting one foot on the toilet , reaching between my legs,,nothing worked , I crawled back into my bed and hit the nurse button and told her I have a problem , she came down to my bed and I told her, she just giggled and said its normal , Not for me it wasn't,. But like Janieh said , baby wipes are a must have , I still pamper my butt with them,
Good Luck
