back pain and swelling after fall from horse

hi everyone,
last night i fell off my horse when we were showjumping. i landed quite harshly on my lower back. it was extremely painful and i couldnt bare to walk for about 5 minutes after it. i did get back on for about 5 minutes which was probably not the best decision but anyone that rides horses will understand why and i could ride even though it was with a lot of discomfort. when i got home however i took a look at it and there is a major sort of lump/ extreme swelling around my lower spine and once the adrenalin wore off i got pain like u couldnt imagine!! it hurts to sit down or to move my right leg and i cant walk at my normal pace.
it has happened before however and there was a small lump in the same area that never went away prior to this fall and i never got it checked out properly but now it is much much worse and painful. so basically what i was hoping is if someone could tell me what exactly this lump might be? and would it be harmful to my health? also is it more likely to be muscular swelling or a vertebre out of place? i will go to the dr's today because im just not risking anything with my back but any opinions would be appreciated, cheers

Re: back pain and swelling after fall from horse

Too,

I would encourage you to get it looked at by an orthopedic or spine doctor, rather than wait. The knot could be swelling or scar tissue --hard to say but at least an x-ray is in order maybe an MRI.
I had a horse for 12 years and took more than one fall landing on my back more than once. Many years later I finally got a diagnosis of spondylolithesis and pars defects (fractures), plus other misc things. My point is: would I have stopped riding? No probably not, but I would have been more AWARE of risks and possibly more cautious. I don't even know if the falls caused the end result of where I am at now, but certainly could have contributed in a cumulative way.
If you have insurance, I would get a diagnosis to see if any damage was done to your vertebra or disks and put your mind at ease.
Hope this is helpful and feel better.

P.S. Ice is real good for pain and swelling. I swear by it. 20-30 minutes only.

Re: back pain and swelling after fall from horse

well my dr doesnt think its anything serious, just some brusing around my spine. the pain lessens every day but is still there. i was wondering though if anyone had some remedies to at least reduce the swollen muscle around my back coz i have this feeling its not really going to go away?

Re: back pain and swelling after fall from horse

Arnica is good for bruising if it's just bruising as you said. It usually works best on new injuries but would be helpful and certainly can't hurt to try. It's found in health food stores or vitamin stores and is a natural ointment.
Glad it's nothing serious, hope you feel better soon!
