LS/S1 Fusion and Diskectomy - how long before you can bend and twist?

I am 7 weeks post op PLIF L5/S1 and all is going well. I had my 6 week assessment last weekand my surgeon is happy with my progress. I am walking ok, and he wants me in 2 weeks time to start to gradually stop wearing my back brace. One thing I forgot to ask him was when will I be able to bend and twist again? I presume once the xrays show that I have fused succesfully, and then only after physiotheraphy.

Can anyone offer any comments? Thanks!

Re: LS/S1 Fusion and Diskectomy - how long before you can bend and twist?

Hiyah, the bone graft was from the bony part of the back of my spine which my surgeon had to chop off to get to the disk - i think it is called the spinal process. I couldn't really say if it was painful - the whole operation was painful! However I only took medication for a couple of weeks after coming out of hospital and then it was only paracetamol - I think inthe US / Canada they are called Tylamol or something similar?? Now, 7 weeks on, I am pretty much walking as normal.... am over an inch taller.... with no nerve pain and only a slight amount of back pain but I am not about to run just yet!!!

For what it's worth I had a Grade 2 spondylolisthesis, DDD, pars interarticularis defects and nerve foramena narrowing and compression.

As far as I know I have two PEEK cages in place of the disk and in these the bone grafts were packed with some demineralised bone matrix, if that helps.

I just hope when the time comes the xrays show I have fused..
