Back brace- how often to wear ?

Hello,

I was just prescribed a back brace for my pain-- all new to me. MRI showed stenosis at a few levels & L5 is slipped onto S1-- fun, fun-- I am a nervous reck about what might lie ahead.
I got my back brace today but not sure how often to wear it & how long to keep on. It feels good when I put it on, but after a while I am uncomfortable-- take it off & in a short while I am back to square one with pain, particularly around my right side & waist area. I think this must be from muscle strainbut it hurts like heck even around to the right side of my abdomen ( anyone else get this kind of weird pain ?).

I alo am worried that if you use the brace too much your own muscles will get weak. I thought the idea is to strenghten the muscles ?

Just want this to all go away-- I have so many other medical issues & this is throwing me over the edge I;m afraid.

Thanks for listening & for any advice...

Re: Back brace- how often to wear ?

Hello, and welcome to brace world. The brace will wear in a bit and flex some, but mainly it is to restrict you from bending and twisting, which will put stress on the disc and nerves. I get support from my brace, but have to take it off now and then. Normally when I set down here at the keyboard it is off. When I walk down the street or putts around the house, I have it on. I am to have it on all the time but while sleeping. I do better with it on, than off. Nevertheless, at times it bothers my ribs so I take it off, and put it back on when needed. When I got fitted for mine, they gave me a sterile white brace, and I thought to myself that I hated that, so when I got it home, I tie dyed it, it has blue, yellow and red spots all over it. The nurses loved it. I need mine while my fusion heals and find that when without it, I find myself doing things I should not, so I try my best to have it on. You should call the Doctor that gave it to you and se what he wants you to do with it. It does help.

Re: Back brace- how often to wear ?

Thanks Coast Guard Dad. Tie dye-- cool !!!
I had my first visit with the ortho this past week. He prescribed the brace & I asked him how & when to use it-- his answer was that the surgical supply people would tell me-- not !
I'm already disgusted besides being in pain. I made an appt with a second spine specialist but can't get in until 10/11.

thanks again ~
