Question Anyone have an L6 vertebra?

Does anyone have a 6th Lumbar vertebra? Im having lower back problems and wonder if this could affect it?

Also, the doctors report says "There looked to be six lumbar vertebra present with the first sacral segment being partially lumbarized. On the right side the L6 transverse process is normal while on the left side, the L6 transverse process is quite large and looks to articulate with the sacrum." (The left side is the problem side)

Can someone tell me what this means?

Re: Anyone have an L6 vertebra?

Howdy-
My husband has a L6 vertebra. He has the very occassional lower back/sciatic pain episode. And he has more recently strained his lower back twice after crazy amounts of lifting and straining. Trust me, I gave him a drubbing both times! Otherwise, he is remarkable healthy at 47 and has never had a serious back injusry or problem.
I would guess by your report that they are saying your first sacral bone is actually more of an additional lumbar vertebra than anything else. On the right hand side it looks 'normal' but the left hand side is so lumbar that it actually seems like it might move (articulate) with the rest of your sacrum - and a normal sacrum does not move or articulate as the lumbar vertebrae do.
But as to whether this is the cause of your pain or symptoms - I haven't any idea. Anyway, best of luck - Suzy-Q

Re: Anyone have an L6 vertebra?

Thanks for your help, SuzyQ.

You would wonder then if one side is pretty much fixed and the other side moves, wouldnt this cause an unstable situation for the spine? Or at least problems with it? (or with the muscles and ligaments?)

Re: Anyone have an L6 vertebra?

Hi

I have a transitional lumberization of S1.
Which basically means i have an extra vertebrae on my left side but my spine specialist says its quite a common thing an for me its not the cause of my back pain.

Hope this helps.

Regards
