Hello all,

Question. The nurse just called to do the pre-op screening questionare. While she was giving the instructions to me she mentioned that I will be having a Lamenectomy / Discectomy. From the research I've done on-line this past week the lamenectomy is when they actually remove a portion of bone and the discectomy is when they cut away the protrusions/herniations that are responsible for the nerve pain. The surgeon had told me that I was just having a discectomy. Is it normal for them to list the proceedure this way or does the lam/disc usually happen together?

I have never had either surgery, but thought that with laminectomy they remove part of the bony lamina to get to the disc and nerves..I know that diet dr pepper...and several other people. I hope you find the answers you are needing. vette

Hi there! I did have a laminectomy in May of last year and they removed bone spurs and router rootered (this sounds gross but the best way to describe it) the vertebrae to make room for the nerves to run thru the vertebrae without being compressed.

I think these are done together often and he was making sure that he covered all his basis in surgery. I know when I signed my operating permission I signed for a laminectomy and fusion. He only did the laminectomy but unfortunately I went back to the operating room 3 weeks ago for a fusion due to unstability of the vertebrae.

Take care and definitely talk to your surgeon for clarification at your pre-op appt or before surgery.

Those preop interviews are fun huh. Mine lasted a long time because she was having trouble with her computer. Sure hope she got all the information in correctly.

I don't know anything about that procedure but my thoughts and prayers will certainly be with you. What time is your surgery? My is at 8 I have to be at the hospital showered clean and ready at 6. Whew is that early.

Hi Clover,

The nurse interview was actually done two x's. They set up the first call for Thur. at 1:30 and we played 50 questions so when I got a call at 1:30 again today I was a little suprised. She said apparently the nurse that called yesterday didn't save the information in the system because there was nothing there. Now I know that 100 mg of demerol is a strong dose of narcotics, I'm just wondering which one of us was on it yesterday.

LOLOLOLOL My surgery is at 9:20 am, I need to be there at 7:20. I guess I'll be prayin for ya startin when I get up until they poke me with the coctail. I agree that it is early, I prefer early to late though. Late day surgerys are hard because of fasting (cookies and chocolate) and coffee restrictions. Did you get an after care instruction sheet from your surgeon? One of the bullets says that they don't want you to shower or tub bathe until your follow up 10 days to 2 wks. I can tell you now that won't happen. I would be so ripe that Shawley could smell me up in western PA. LOLOLOL Stay positive Clover, it will all be good. Usta (that is much better) I know I am not yvette but it works. I have not gotten an aftercare sheet yet. I am really glad I haven't as the brace and everything I did get was enough.

Funny I wonder if we had the same pre op nurse you aren't in wyoming are you? HAHA

I am sure you and I both will be fine and soon be back on here giving Yvette the encourgment to get thru the last minute jitters. I know Pepper and her updates has helped me a bunch.
