back problems for over 4 years

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone could help me with some info.

I had a motorcycle accident in 2002 which has left me in chronic lower back pain. I landed on my back and the bike landed on top off me. I have seen a few specialists within a few months of my accident and they both have said i should be fully fit within 12 months. It has been four years and the pain is just as bad as day one. I keep seeing my doctor and he has put me on Tramadol 50mg painkillers ever since. On Friday 12th January, I had an examination at a hospital (back Clinic) and i was told that the Deep muscles in my lower back, next to my spine are damaged and there is nothing they can do apart from putting me on a waiting list for pain management clinic. This will will help me learn to live with the pain and i might be able to have the injection every six months. I have been told this is something that i will have to live with for the rest of my life. I get the pain everyday and i can't walk for more than 15 mins without getting really bad pain. It hurts to stand and wash-up or do the ironing and the house work is a little difficult too.
I was wondering if i could apply for the Blue badge parking???? I would love to speak to you guys so please get in touch.

Did you have problems with tramadol like a feeling of being in your on little world and not being able to concertrate! I'm finding it difficult at work to concertrate. Also i work 30 miles away and drive down the M6 and the tramadol do make me a little drowsy. Even to the point of feeling i'm nodding off. I have tried many other tablets but tramadol does help with the pain??
I have printed of the form DLA and have sent off for the Blue badge form, like people say its worth a try.

I do agree that there are many people out there that abuse the system and people like us who are in serious pain have to struggle.

Thanks

Steve

Hey Steve ,
Sorry about the pain your living in ,alot of people here have to live in the pain also , very sorry. You know you shouldn't be driving while taking your tramadol .

I went to our local D.O.T. and got a application for a blue badge parking ticket. (handycap parking right ?) I just have to take it to my doctor for him to fill it out , very easy to do. Did you wear your helmet when you crashed your bike ? My best friend just bought a new Harley , I ask my wife If I could have one and she said NO you'll kill yourself . I used to have a yamamha Maxima 650 back in the day.

I was curious what you meant by people abuse the system ? You talking about the people who have the blue cards ? Sometimes I wonder to ,but I swore I would never doubt anyone again , expecially a back injury person. Live and learn I guess.
Welcome to the boards

Re: back problems for over 4 years

I'm guessing that you're in England. Is that right? If so, the laws across the pond are completely different. In the U.S., we can get a temporary handicapped permit by having our doctor sign the form from the DMV. Laws vary by state, but the DMV can tell you exactly what the law is.

Someone else from England recently posted about this, also calling it blue badge parking. That's why I'm guessing you're from there. Apparently, you have to be permanently disabled to get it there. They're much tighter about extending that privilege. From some of the people I've seen wisking into those spots here, as I struggle to get out of my car without twisting, we're a bit too lax about it here! It infuriates me when I can't find a spot and am just sitting there waiting and someone comes traipsing out of a store at a happy clip and a smile on their face with two arms filled with bags, tosses them in the back of the car, hops in with no difficulty whatsoever, and drives off. And yes, they have the permit! Either it belongs to someone else, or they got it dishonestly!

Sorry I can't be more help, but here's the link to the other thread where this was discussed recently. Copy and paste: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/showthread.php?t=471698&highlight=blue+badge

Blessings,
Emily

Re: back problems for over 4 years

Hi Steve

Yep i was on Tramadol for only a short time as they made me so tired i couldnt live like that.
I only had to take 2 an i was out like a light.

I am on 8 Co-codamol for pain,Diclofenic as my anti-inflammatory an Gabapentin for nerve pain.
I must say the Co-codamol doesnt do much for the pain but it is manageable taken with the other meds.

I am in the UK too but sorry dont know anything about getting a blue badge.

Is it worth going back to your doctor about tablets that suit you better?
It does take quite a while to get the meds that work best for you doesnt it?

Keep in touch

Hi Steve,
Did you sort things out after? I`m pretty sure you need the High mobility of DLA to get the blue badge

Re: back problems for over 4 years

Have you had an MRI? It would be good to get an opinion at another surgeons office as well.
