Cool News.

Situation: L4-L5, L5-S1 herniation with extrusion at S1. Free fragment.
This has been ongoing for >1 year.

The good news: The neural surgeon I consulted performs microendoscopic discectomy on an outpatient basis.

That takes a lot of the anxiety out of having surgery.

There's also a pretty good chance that I would be included in a study, in which the damaged disks would be injected with some soft material to maintain volume. I'm okay with that.

I am not in much pain at all right now, so I am not motivated to have surgery. If/when it comes to that, I am less hesitant to pull the trigger, now.

Re: Cool News.

That is good news, woodworker. I hope if I even need surgery for my herniated disc that I will be able to go with the endoscopic procedure too. The advances they're making in minimally invasive surgery are really exciting.

I've never heard of a study where they inject stuff into the disc to preserve the height, but it's a fascinating idea. Imagine if a procedure like that could eventually replace fusion surgery.
