hey,
im 16 and nearly a year ago i was diagnosed through x-ray then MRI scan of having a bulging disc in my lower lumbar spine. they said that it ought to shrink back off the nerve, and i should be without pain sooner or later, but they dont know how long its going to take.
as i said its been nearly a year and it hasnt eased at all. I am never without pain, especially in school, where i have to sit for a long period of time, and in PE, which i am taking as a GCSE.
I am seeing an osteopath every so often but i was wondering if anyone knew anything that would help ease the pain, or if anyone has had the same thing and it has got better/not got better.
For bulging discs, you could try the McKenzie exercises. They're designed to pop the disc back into place. There's a book called "Treat your own back" with the exercises in it, or you could find a physical therapy program that is McKenzie approved.
Good luck. It does heal, but sometimes it takes awhile.
Hello Holly, i too have 2 bulging/herniated disk. I have been in constant pain for the past 3 months. Have your doc given you any pain meds or physical therapy? How have you coped a whole year with the pain and do you have nerve pain also? I have almost exhausted all conservative treatment I have been on every pain med, muscle relaxant and now on lyrica for the nerve pain, also pt and 1 esi injection. I am schedule for the 2nd in a couple of weeks. Well, i hope you find some relief and talk to you md about other options. Take care
Rachel
It is said that it can take up to two years for a disc to heal on its own. Some heal faster and others much slower. And then some never heal. Everyone is different.
If you are still in that much pain, you need to speak with your parents about this and with your osteo to see what else can be done to help you with your pain.
Hang in there. You are not alone. My back issues started at age 18. Im now 45. All the best to you.
One thing for you to remember.. dont EVER give up on yourself. Don't let this consume you. You have a full life to lead and keep your mind sharp to reach for that goal.
