6 Months Tlif Post Op......still Have Pain!!!!

My surgery was a success from the Docs standpoint and hardware looks great. I have the cage w/rods and screws. The mid back spasms and left groin pain have gone, but I still have alot of pain in my lower left back area, right above my hip. I have been off all meds for over a month, and PT 2x a week, and light weights 5 times a week. I have problems getting up from laying down or sitting for a long time, especially in the morning.
Healing takes up to a year, but my question is when will the pain lessen? I can deal with it, but it is really hard and I push through it knowing that it will lessen over time. How will I know if the surgery didn't fix the pain???

I'm in the same boat. I'm also 6 months out of double fusion, Laminectomy, Disectomy, bone grafting. No cage. Have two rods and six screws. I had a few months in between where the pain was not bad. Now I have horrible muscle and nerve pain. The surgeon says the instrumentation looks great. He said I could have pain for a year. If still in pain by end of June I should call him and he will send me for tests. I didn't ask what kind of test. Sometimes better not knowing. I will talk to my primary. Maybe she will send me for an EMG on my back and legs. Had one a few years ago which showed some Neuropathy. Probably got worse.

Lala,
I'll tell you a little secret , as long as your hardware is stable they will call a fusion a sucess UNLESS your having pain. My first Dr. told me I was looking real good , but I was having extreme pain in my back , I was doing a work hardening program to work up to going back to my job..Freaking therapist had me picking up a 65 lb pallet and throwing it up on a table and back down to the floor..I heard a snap in my back and felt a sharp pain going from my hip to my feet. Went back to my neurosurgeon ,he took an xray and sent me home said I was fine and there wasn't a thing he could do for me..To make a long story shorter , I found a orthopedic spine specialist with a fellowship in the spine , he looked at my xray and said I never fused plus I have a broken pedical screw that had to come out ASAP !

To be honest with you , you shouldn't be lifting weights if you had a fusion...Putting pressure on the above or below disc isn't a very good thing.
You can bench / pull downs curl's as long as you don't put wieght on that back..No wonder your hurting...

Take care bud..

What type of approach to your spine did your surgeon use? Did he go through the back or the stomach? I'm 2 months post-op fusion L3-4 through the stomach and I'm having the same problems you have discribled. I did have another fusion 20 years ago and it took a full year to recover. If they went through your stomach I was told 3 to 6 months. Has any of your old pain gone away since the surgery or is it the same as before?

fusionman,
Your way to early to complain , it's probably still operation pain your experiencing , give it time..I know things are real gloomy here but you might be a sucess story..It took me a few months before I got some relief from my surgery..It's not as bad as it was before but it's bad enough where it drives me crazzy.

You'll be fine relax and heal..Don't lift wieghts..:)

 Shawley,

Hahaha…that’s a good one…the TV abs workout machine is all we need! You crack me up! Reminds me of the movie“There’s Something About Mary” Starring Ben Stiller & Cameron Diaz in the scene were the hitchhiker tells Ben Stiller he has a great business idea “ The seven minute abs workout”. Did you ever see it? Too funny.

Seriously though my goal is to return to swimming at least 3 times a week sometime in the future. As you say I have a lot more healing to do and need to be patient.

Re: 6 Months Tlif Post Op......still Have Pain!!!!

the doc went through my back, and he told me to lift weights more aggressively as i am in my early 30's and was in great shape pre injury. He also stated I can bench 150lbs. I am returning to work in 3 weeks and will ask to keep my case open, because I still have alot of pain. What other tests can they do???? Could it be sciatica??? My pain never goes down my leg. Only now it is lower left back and into my buttock.
I just want my life back and thats why I am returning to work. Pain sucks!!!

Fusionman,
I have seen that movie it was funny..7 minute abs :D

Lala , benching isn't bad for your lower back , but make sure you do not put pressure on your spine ,expecially if your having sciatic pain :dizzy: .
I do a little benching myself It's also 150 lbs I do 3 sets of 10 and it don't bother me , if I stand up with a beer in my hand OUCH ! I haven't lift in a LONG time , probably 3-4 months now , I don't have the energy anymore , I think I'm dieing.......I hope soon!
