Congenitally Sharp Pendicles & L3 Nerve Symptoms

Hey gang... my mri states that I have congenitally short pedicles... I know congenital means born with but what negative effect would sharp pendicles have?

Also, what are the symptoms (ie which part of the leg) of a compressed nerve at L4-L3?

Any info would be great... take care... Dave!

Re: Congenitally Sharp Pendicles & L3 Nerve Symptoms

Hey Dave,

My Discectomy was at L3 and L4. Prior to surgery, I had severe hip pain inside and outside, lower right back pain in small of back, top of thigh, knee pain and numbness from knee to sock line( crew socks) I was also starting to have incontinence problems, I would leak on occasion, didn't know I had to go and before I could get pants down, would start to trickle. Stream was just a trickle, couldn't force it. Sitting on the head was the worst. Post surgery , from knee to sock line felt like leg was on fire, skin was hyper sensitive on left side of leg, on right, still have residual numbness I am still having nerve pain in all the same areas but not as bad since I am on gabapentin 900mg 3x a day and Cymbalta TA 20 2x's a day. Unless I over do it, it seems to be getting better. Start Pt next week. MD said nerves are really ****** off and that is why I am still having problems. he said it takes a while for the nerves to settle down. Hope yours is more sucessful. Are you having surgery soon? What problem do you have at L3 and L4? Usta

Re: Congenitally Sharp Pendicles & L3 Nerve Symptoms

Hey Usta... thanks for sharin... the 1st neurosurgeon I saw would like me to wait awhile longer at this point as my pain is manageable.

At some point he is recommending a PLIF fusion w/spacers & bmp plus hardware at S5-L4 & hopefully just a trim (micro-d) at L5-L4. At this point I don't really have any major symptoms from L4-L3 except slight pain at the front of my left leg at the hip joint area upon getting up from sitting position. Unfortunately my mri shows a shallow left protrusion of the disk at this location so was just curious to know what to look for.

How long again has it been since ur micro-d & are u still glad u did it?

Take care... Dave!

Re: Congenitally Sharp Pendicles & L3 Nerve Symptoms

Dave,

I had a regular discectomy on Feb. 26th, will be four weeks on Tuesday. Surgical pain didn't last long, nerve pain on the other hand was a bi***. It is getting better though, I start pt on Tuesday and follow up with surgeon two weeks later. Yes, I would do it again. The nerve pain post op hasn't been a picnic, but the pain I was in pre surgery was a whole nother ball game, don't wish to ever play that one again. When is your surgery? Yours sounds like a lot more indepth than mine, I trust that you won't have the nerve pain post, since it doesn't sound like it is too bad now. I had an event on Feb. 7th, right leg hurt so bad that I couldn't sit, stand, walk. I just cried, started to hyperventalate, so dh took me to er for morphine shot. Never want to go there again. Every day seems to improve a little, I know it will take time, so that being said...I pray that you do well and are pain free soon. If you have anymore questions, fire away, I'm here.. usta

Re: Congenitally Sharp Pendicles & L3 Nerve Symptoms

Hi Lizard,
I had a rather large herniation on the right side of L3 L4. Funny thing was that the Rad. missed it on the MRI. He said there was a small herniation at L3, no nerve compression. Glad I had a really good Spine Specialist. He knew right away that surgery couldn't wait, that pt or shots would be useless. So I had a discectomy 4 weeks ago today. After the surgery, he told family that surgery went well but that nerves in right leg would take several weeks to settle down. I just learned that tonight from my mother-in-law. No one really needed to tell me as it was really bad for two weeks post op. He put me on gabapenten900mg 3x a day and cymbalta TA 20 2x a day and that has really helped it settle down. I start pt today. Did you have a specific question Lizard? I'd be glad to help you any way that I can. Just ask! Usta
