Question The relation between the sciatic nerve and the foot being swollen and cold

Hello again... I have a question.. Is swelling and coldness in the foot and sometimes feeling numb part of sciatica?. And when the EMG is done. do they go into your feet too?

Sadly yes those are signs of the nerve being pinched. I don't know if they go through the foot. I don't think I could get a EMG. I'd do a surface EMG which is titled SEMG but a regulat EMG I am way to chicken.

Re: The relation between the sciatic nerve and the foot being swollen and cold

I am too..My Dr wants to me to get an EMG done after I have already had an MRI that clearly shows the herniated discs and that the sciatic nerve is pinching and that I have DDD. My thing is this.. why do an EMG NOW when since 2003 we have been dealing with this. This Dr only met me one time and put me through h*** for 30 minutes then called me a baby and to suck it up...so why would I want to go through this painful procedure?. My MRI was one of the few that showed EVERYTHING that was needed to see..

Okay ya'll, I'm stumped! I have sciatica, no numbness just horrific tingling half of the bottom of both feet, pain that runs down the leg and under my foot to one toe and swelling up to my ankles. So what stumps me is, what is an EMG and an SEMG and why are they painful? Are they worse than a Discogram?

Hi Autismmom,

First thing, I'm so sorry that your dealing with such pain and a very un-understanding Dr. If only he could be dealt your pain for one day, he wouldn't be telling people to suck it up any longer, thats for sure.

Is there any chance that you can get another opinion? It seems like the evidence is already there of whats going on. I would be afraid that he only wants to torture you more and get paid for it. Is he a spinal specialist?

Take care and please keep us posted on what you find out.

They do test your feet with the EMG and sometimes with the Nerve test that usually goes along with it (That one uses patches). They are trying to determine the extent of injury to the nerve and what exact nerve is causing the pain or damage. To correct the entrapment, they have to determine exact nerve. I have had one fusion surgery and getting ready for another surgery to try to get rid of the entrapped nerves. I have had at least 4 EMG's, one discogram, One cat-scan/dye(same as Myelogram), One MRI/dye, 4 regular MRI's and enough x-rays to glow in the dark (LOL). The worst thing to date was when the temporary wire fell out of my spine when they tried to implant the spinal stimulator. (never got a permanent one). Spinal Headache! Ouch!!

Re: The relation between the sciatic nerve and the foot being swollen and cold

This is for Lilredmom...I have not had any of those tests done yet.. however.. from what I gather the tests are for to see what nerves are damaged..why they hurt.. well from what I have read its that they stick small needles into the muscles and nerves up and down the area they want to know..and I am a needle freak.. I freak out.. and to know that they arewanting to stick me up and down my legs.. and then the nerve test where they shock me.. oh h*** no! I have only heard and read about the discogram..and from that I get that IT HURTS! The SEMG.. well all that does it put small electrodes on your area of concern and it is simular to an EKG~No pain whatsoever... I am not sure if Neuro docs use them but my Chiro did...
