Shot for sciatic pain?

I had a fusion at L4 two months ago and now I have severe tailbone pain(I had it before but not as bad) and sciatic pain on left side (this was my bad side). It doesn't matter if I am at work or home the pain is constant. I think the only reason I get some sleep at night is because I take amytriptolene for migraines. I had a shot in tail bone that the Dr thought would take pain away but a week out and it is worse. Also had an MRI and it was fine but my sciatic is getting worse. My daughter has had trouble w/sciatic pain and she mentioned that she gets a shot when she starts having pain and it really help. I don't see my Spine Specialist until the 13th and was thinking of going to the ER today to see about a shot. Have any of you with sciatic problem have this shot and did it give you any relief? I have some Vicodin but not much and afraid Dr will not refill it. I have some Lyrica that I used to take for my pain and was thinking about starting that up and see if it helps. You people know so much that I thought I would ask. Thanks

Re: Shot for sciatic pain?

Katirina. Have you ever had an injury, that might have caused your sciatic problem?, since injury to the piriformis muscle, mimic' sciatic pain to the 'T'. I know this because I suffered ten very long years of unrelenting L-buttocks pain down to the side of my foot for pain years. And this was from and injury I sustained from a chiropactor's manipulation, that injuried the piriformis muscle. Alittle food for thought<> here in case your not aware of this the 'sciatic nerve', an the 'piriformis muscle.' run in a very close proximity of one another. I found this out 9 years, after the incident with the chiropactor, dubbed sciatic problem. Of course this doctor, never step up to the plate, and admitted he injuried me.... and thats a very long story.

But this reply is for you, and I will tell you, I never found and pain relief from any oral medication. But after ten years of still try despartely for relief. And once I had heard of the piriformis, having the same symptoms a the piriformis. I had insisted a pain management doc, would specially inject the piriformis muscle....where as in the pass the sciatic nerve was always injected.

I certainly hope you find some relief with your pain.

Re: Shot for sciatic pain?

You are only two months out from your fusion surgery and it is normal to get flare ups during the healing process. You could be overdoing it.

And to your medication.. it is VERY normal for you to still be on meds and for sometime to come. Don't worry about calling your doctor and asking for pain meds and be very descriptive of the pain you are having and put a number to it, along with expressing that you are hurting so bad, you considered going to the ER.

There is no reason for you to tough out the pain on your own at this stage from your fusion surgery.

Keep us posted.
