Pain meds..

Hi, me again..do you ever feel guilty about taking pain meds, for your pain? I take Vicodin for my pain. I wait till my pain gets real bad and then I take one. It is the ONLY thing that will take the pain away from me. And I won't lie, it is fun being on them. I just feel a bit funny, taking them on a basis, even though I know it is for pain. Looking forward to my first appt. w/ my pain mngmt. specialist on Monday!

Thanks for listening and sharing your stories...

Re: Pain meds..

I think we all feel guility for taking meds repeatedly for pain. Part of the reason is that many doctors don't want to prescribe them and sometimes we are given the run around by office staff for refills, etc.

I also wait until the pain is severe before taking meds. Sometimes if I go use the hot tub, it will calm it down enough that I can handle the pain. Other times, the pain is to far gone and it takes awhile longer for the meds to kick in.

Personally, I don't enjoy taking the meds period and wish I could get off them. I don't like they way they make me feel. I become very serious on them or I am knocked out completely.

Good luck with your upcoming appt.

Re: Pain meds..

Percocet and soma. I take them as needed. On an average I take 1 percocet a day and 2 soma's a day. If the pain is real bad, I will take two percocets every 6 hours, 1 soma in the am and 1 flexeril at bedtime.

I have been on these meds since 2004.

Hope that helps.

Re: Pain meds..

I always feel guilty. I have been on meds since 2004, and I can't wait to get off them. I don't wait for it to get too bad though. I take my meds on a regular basis. If I wait to long, my day will be gone due to the pain.

DrPepper, does the Soma help with the pain? I think I may ask for that as it seems to be prescribed by a lot of PM docs.

Re: Pain meds..

Soma does work for me. In the beginning it put me into a fog but now that I have been taking it since January, it no longer does. However, the flexeril knocks me out.

Re: Pain meds..

I try to take my meds when I feel the pain starting to come back. I want to stay ahead of them because I don' t want to have to pay catch up especially now with this bad flare up. Which by the way has decided to set up camp and stay a while.

I also hate taking pills and the feeling of out of control especially with the Soma. I have to admit that the Soma does help and if I can get thru the first 30 minutes or so I am usually fine.

Well better run and try to get some sleep

Re: Pain meds..

I don't like being on pain meds, but I have never ever felt guilty about it. If you need them for pain, there's no reason to feel guilty.

Heidi, sweetie, if your pain meds are making you feel too "good", I think you're on too high a dose. Pain meds should make you have less pain but not get high! Please be careful. I really urge you to be honest with your doctor and get your meds adjusted.

Take care!

Thanks for all of your responses! BlueAtlas, I only take 1 pill, maybe 2 a day if the pain persists for a long time. I am being careful and listening to my body : )

Re: Pain meds..

I haven't really felt guilty, per se, when I've taken pain meds. But I do worry about getting hooked and only took scripts when they were offered to me; and I never even took the amount of doses per day that the script bottle would say. Again, didnt want to get too used to them, plus I thought if I took up to 6 pills a day, I wouldnt function. Not to mention I have to work, so I'd take one pill in the am as soon as I got in and one at night. This at least gave them time to wear off so I could drive safely. I got pain meds after surgery, which I didnt feel guilty about b/c that is just the norm after surgery. OTher than that, my rheumy's given me a few scripts for painkillers maybe 4 times over the past several years. The PM I saw only gave me epidurals & that was it. So I don't take them regularly and like others, if I do get them, take as little as possible.

Re: Pain meds..

I do feel guilty also taking my Percocet, Zanaflex (rest of them for nerve pain and they don't make me feel ooozy :-)

But i don't like the feeling after i take them: it takes me away from real life, i am very sleepy and dizzy. I don't like the fact that life goes on and i am out while i could be outside or read or be with my family and friends. Although i take them only when i can't take the pain anymore - i do enjoy the fact that when I take them -in 20 min or so pain starts to get less and less. Thanks to meds!

Re: Pain meds..

There were a couple of people who have said they have been on medication since 2004. My question is: how? Are you to the point where no more surgeries will help, and just get the meds to deal with the pain? I only ask because, after my 2nd surgery back in october, before it was decided we should try anything else..around january-feb. my doctor started getting real ancy about giving me refills for pain meds. Granted I wasn't seeing a pain specialist, but they still seemed un-easy about it and this was only after a few months from the surgery. So I'm curious as to how you could be kept on meds such as percocet for 3 years. I figure they would either cut you off or try to setup some type of surgery to correct the problem. I'm asking because of the situation I am in now, I've had 3 surgeries and my pain is still returning. I'm at the point where I can't afford anymore surgeries or anything else. Are you telling me I would be able to see a pain management specialist in order to manage my pain meds and be able to continue to get them in order to help with the pain?

Re: Pain meds..

That would be me on the pain meds. I don't abuse them and my GP and surgeon could see the pain written all over my face, elevated blood pressure, and gait. I suffered from 2004 to 2006 before my GP would refer me to a spinal surgeon. I have had two surgeries in one year for my back and just now my surgeon wants me off them. I am 5 months post op from a fusion and I have herninated disc above the one they fused already. I am trying my best to get off them but I need to take them by evening or the nerve pain becomes to unbearable. At this point, I don't think I can get off them but I am trying like h*ll to get off them completely by loosing weight and using the pool and spa daily. I suspect I will soon be in pain management.

First of I want to make it clear I wasn't implying anyone was abusing them, I just wondered what they were doing to stay on the meds so long without hassle as I am in the same situation.

Secondly, you say you were on meds from 2004-2006 until you were referred to a surgeon. What were you doing during this time to get pain meds then? Pain specialist? Or just calling your doctor for refills.

I also felt I should point out someone said if you get a "high" feeling from pain meds you are taking too strong a dose. I have to say I disagree, back when I first started Vicodin I was taking the lowest strength possible and still just 1-2 would give me the "high" type feeling, I think it depends on the person.

Re: Pain meds..

I am sorry if you thought I was implying that you said anyone was abusing them. Let me explain what I mean't .....I have a tendency to not take any meds until I can't handle it so I don't take them around the clock unless the pain is totally out of control. Sorry for the confusion.

I was going back and forth to my GP and she was prescribing them. I am on an HMO and she would not refer me. Basically, I was doing nothing but taking steroids, pain pills, suffering and trying to muddle thru life. Finally, my hubby went in with me and demanded that I be referred. I had a previous fusion in 1982 and he was concerned that something was wrong with that and that there was more to my pain then stenosis. He was correct and thank goodness hubby insisted that the GP refer me. My hubby can be very assertive if push comes to shove. I probably have permament nerve damage because nothing was done for so long.
