Like Moldova said, there are several types. I had the TLSO. It's hard plastic and can be either one piece or two. I had both types, one after the other. The one piece type has an opening in the front so you can squeeze into it. Both types are held tight with velcro. They go from under your arms and above your chest to as far down as you can have it and still sit. It definitely protects you!
The TLSO is fitted by putting a body cast on you. They cut the cast back off and use it to make a form for molding the brace, so it's an exact fit just for you.
I wore mine for 5 months full time, except when I was in bed.
