what to take for headaches prior to surgery??

I am having a (hopefully) one level fusion on 7 January and know that I am not supposed to take aspirin or advil, etc. for two weeks prior to surgery. What do you take for headaches??

marlosmom,

Your doc should have told you on your last visit I would think...

I would say that anyhting that does not thin your blood; That is what the spine surgeon told me...last Feb beofre my triple fusion....

As many pain pills that I was on was ruff on me but I amde it through it; Im sure you will as well.

I wish you the best.

Re: what to take for headaches prior to surgery??

Just to be safe I would do OTC tylenol like pepper said, or if you have anything like vicodin. Definitely no aspirin, aleve, or any blood thinning pain reliever, and my doc said not ibuprofen either. And you definitely don't want to take any ibuprofen after the surgery for at least the first few weeks. Stick with tylenol.

Take Care,
David

Keep in mind that if you are taking any pain medications (percocet, vicodin, etc) they also have acetominophen (tylenol) in them. Too much acetominphen can cause liver damage so don't overdo it.

Re: what to take for headaches prior to surgery??

Here is a pretty complete list of NSAIDS (Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs). These need to be discontinued for several weeks before surgery, and held for months after a fusion to allow new bone growth.

Aspirin
Diclofenac Potassium (Cataflam)
Diclofenac Sodium (Voltaren)
Etodolac (Lodine)
Indomethacin (Indocin)
Ketorolac (Toradol)
Sulindac (Clinoril)
Tolmetic (Tolectin)
Meclofenamate
Mefenamic acid (Ponstel)
Fenoprofen (Nalfon)
Flurbiprofen (Ansaid)
Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil)
Ketoprofen (Orudis, others)
Naproxen Sodium (Anaprox, Aleve)
Naproxen (Naprosyn)
Oxaprozin (Daypro)
Nabumetone (Relafen)
Difusinal (Dolobid)
Salsalate
Celecoxib (Celebrex)
Meloxicam (Mobic)
Piroxicam (Feldene)

SpineAz is correct that too much acetaminophen is dangerous to your liver. People have died from completely accidental acetaminophen overdoses. Generally we say 4000 mg (8 extra strength Tylenol) is the 24 hour limit for most people. Anyone who consumes alcohol daily or has any type of liver disease is not even allowed that much.

Re: what to take for headaches prior to surgery??

Yep, Tylenol would be the treatment of choice. It never did squat for me, though, unless it was just along for the ride with something stronger, like Vicodin or Percocet. If you're like me and it doesn't do anything, you might have to give your doctor a call and ask if there's anything else you can take.

Emily
