Stinging Sensations on Backs of Thighs

Im curious for everyone with any sort of nerve compression and/or damage: I recently have gotten a couple times these weird stinging sensataions on the backs of both upper legs. Here is the best way I can describe it. Did you ever go outside in freezing temperatures for a while, say without gloves on or not enough clothing. And one or more parts of your body gets numb and cold..then when you come inside in the heat, you get this stinging, *****ly sensation when your skin warms up?

I have been getting that feeling a few times on my legs just out of the blue and I hadnt been cold exposed at all. Once while sitting at the computer, another time laying in bed, and another time just walking about in my house. And I am certain it's not temperature related. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Might this also be nerve related....related to some sort of compression in the spine?

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

Hello, Bay...I understand what you are going through. I get these types of sensations in my left buttock down to my toes! I especially notice it whenever I get up from either a laying or sitting position. I have DDD that has caused several problems with my spine. How often have you been experiencing this? Thank you, in advance.

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

Hey girl,
I absolutely get those sensations alot. Sometimes I actually pull my pant leg up to look and see if I have goose bumps...of course I don't. Nerve pain is so weird, it can cause so many different sensations, at least mine does. Sometimes it feel like I have a tight rubber band aroung my leg, pain, burn, ache, the *****ly feeling you mentioned, crampy, spasm, and the feeling of "creepy crawlies" moving through my legs.
Any luck finding a job yet? I'm thinking of you! Feel better my friend!

Deb

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

I get a burning sensation in the front of my thighs the neuro called it meralgia parenthesis. Does it feel like its just on the skin or deeper? the meralgia was the first thing that happened to me when the lumbar region started to go.

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

I was afraid it was probably nerve related. I was doing pretty well after my rounds of ESI's but now I am done with them. I had pretty good pain relief and I was able to walk around more before I started feeling it. And it also helped the stiffness in my spine. I only got these stinging sensations about 3 times, it hurt a little bit, the same it would as if my skin got too cold. I looked but there were no red bumps or anything. Just that *****ly sensation and it seemed to be more in my skin area rather than deep. What sucks is just the past 2 days I've been getting some quick jolts of nerve pains again on the tops of my feet. It happened on my right and left foot, though not at the same time. So I think i'm in for it soon as the steroids will be wearing off soon. Good thing is, this new PM scheduled a follow-up consultation appointment with me for this Thursday. He didnt just give me the shots and be done with me like the first PM did. And this new PM was the one I had to argue my case to ...just to give me the shots. I will ask him about this stinging on my legs if he thinks it could be spine related.

I havent found a job yet : (...but had to sit at some meeting at unemployment yesterday for like 3 hours..UGHHHHHHH. But there were a bunch of my old co-workers there, so we had a reunion LOL and a few of us went to lunch afterwards, so that was nice. I sent my resume to a couple places but havent heard anything back yet.

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

I hope its not nerve related. Maybe something could be irritating your skin. Like a new soap or laundry. I have very sensitive skin and detergent, dryer sheets. I have very sensitive skin so I try to use the same products all the time, but Doug was shopping and found a good deal on some laundry detergent that I have never used before and my skin felt like it was sunburnt. So now I am using the extra rinse cycle and that seems to help some. I will make sure I buy laundry stuff from now on. The pain that I have in my thighs, when I touch it, it has a different sensation. It feels different if I touch my hand that will feel normal but my thighs will feel almost like I am touching someone else. Does that make sense? I had to go thru a bunch of needle sticks with my doctor poking my thighs and he'd say how does this feel sharp dull or no feeling. That was fun, but thats how I got the diagnosis for meralgia paranthesia . Have you touched the area that feels like it stinging? Does it have a different sensation? Keep me posted Dee

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

I have touched the areas & my skin didnt really feel any different. But while sitting it was hurting a bit more, kinda like if I had rug burn there. Thankfully it's not constant, it only happened a few times and didnt last very long, it was just strange. I dont think it was any kind of soap as I always use the same ones, but who knows. I get hives alot too, though usually during flares, and never can relate it any one thing.

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

Hey Bay --- I hope those steroids don't wear off too soon!

I have had what you described and, thankfully, it's been fleeting most times. I also have weird feelings at ties like warm water dripping down my legs (on the inside!) and chalk all these things up to nerve problems. Dagnabbit! I hope you can get some answers/help in your follow-up. Have you tried any of the plethora of nerve meds?

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

Shragie, the only nerve med I ever tried was Lyrica, which was this past summer. However, I was only having mild nerve pain then in my outer hip areas. My rheumy gave me this med, but I didnt go to him for any nerve pain as it was mild. I went to him b/c I was having a flare of joint pains all over, new pains in my hands, eye problems (wasnt sure if it was related) and low grade fever. He then gave me a script for Lyrica & told me it was to help my muscles. So it made no sense at all because my muscles werent hurting, plus I though Lyrica was for nerve pain. But whatever. I took it, and at that time, it seemed to help a little bit with the nerve pain in my hip areas. It did not help my joint pains or fever or eye problems. My muscles didnt feel any different either. It was a 30 day supply and that was it. And he didnt want me to come back LOL. I get the impression he does not want to deal with me anymore.

I have a new PM now and have a follow up appt. tomorrow (after having my 3 ESI's). I'm going to ask him if he thinks the stinging might be nerve related, plus I have some other issues popping up again just recently that I wonder if it's related to my spine, but thats another thread's worht LOL

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

Ahhhhh rats!!!! I asked him (my PM) about the cramping & spasms if it could be related to nerve compression, but I totally forgot to mention this stinging sensation I got a few times. OH well, I'm always forgetting something.

How did your visit go? I just thought I'd check in on you and see how you are doing. I have to tell you (and this makes me feel like a little ol lady) but I have to take notes with me to remember what questions I want to ask. If I don't I always forget something. Take Care, Dee

Re: Stinging Sensataions on Backs of Thighs

It went ok, I guess. He did say that's all the injections I can get because i've had 3 since mid December. He asked if I took anything for pain relief, which I don't. I mean, i've tried Ibuprofen when in alot of pain, but it does nothing. I am not in bad pain constantly, though. But the shots are wearing off and i'm getting stiffer and feeling a little more pain while walking but i've been MUCH worse at other times, so it's not that big a deal. The only problem i'll have is going on interviews walking all stiff and limping a bit. Oh well. But I did mention I was getting alot more cramping & spasms lately and asked if it could be caused by nerve issues. He said it's possible, but I want to make sure im drinking enough and getting enough potassiu, calcium, and magnesium first. He did give me a script for SOMA to try. I took one this morning and don't feel any different, not even tired. Other than that, he said to come back for another follow up in 8 weeks. So that's that. Now I have to call my Rheumy to see if he's going to give me any more scripts for Plaquenil, since my scripts are now done. I've taken it about 3 years now. But he didnt seem to want to see me anymore. Last time I saw him was 6 months ago now. I'll see what he says.
