More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

UGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, I finished my series of 3 ESI's on Jan 28th. The shots did give me alot of pain & stiffness relief, thankfully, more so while not doing much. It did help me go out & walk around for a longer period, though after an hour 1/2 to 2 hours I started feeling it. But the shots were still a big help. During that time I did still get some tingling in my toes, stinging sensations recently on my legs, and some foot and hand cramps. But it was basically minor to me. The cramping, though, has been getting more frequent over the past several days. A couple days ago my right foot was cramping, then all of a sudden it went into my ankle area, and my whole foot was twisted inward. It turned into a bad spasm. It took a while to get rid of it, even with trying to stand on it. My left foot has been cramping up several times througout the day and at night. It happens while laying down, but also while driving, sitting or standing. Then one time it spread to my left ankle area and that whole thing was spasming. Then 2 days ago I also felt a little pain on the ousides of my ankles, like duller nerve pain. Then I was sweeping the other day, and my whole back went into spasms. Thankfully that stopped when I sat down. But it happened so easily and I was only slightly bent forward as anyone would be while sweeping.

Well, then last night I got more left foot cramps which were very painful. I was sitting on the couch and it went up my calf area and was really bad. Then later on, it came back again, but OMG it spasmed in my entire left lower leg/foot/toes, then spread up to my knee, my whole knee area was spasming, I couldnt straigthen my leg. AHHHHH it was sooo painful!!! THen it hurt & spasmed more when I tried to walk it out. It took me about 1/2 hour before it finally stopped.

The other thing I think might be bad is I'm having cramping pains in my buttocks and backs of outer thighs again. I had this terribly before surgery and back then was a symptom of claudication due to stenosis. I certainly dont have all the symptoms I had before surgery and no more clamp or vise like pain in my lower spine & buttocks area. Bad thing is, the cramping stopped when I leaned forward. I'm also getting some dull nerve pain back in my outer hip areas.

The last MRI I had was this past May. I did have new herniations and bulges, plus a piece of tissue stuck in L5 left lateral recess and issues with scar tissue. I also showed alot more bilateral facet hypertrophy and bilateral foramenal narrowing from L3 through S1. This was all new since my surgery in Sept '06.

I dont like this because some of this cramping & spasms, etc..just seems all too familiar. And I do know, at least before my surgery, that much of my spasms/cramps were due to my spine issues. After surgery, it mostly went away. SO I guess i'm mainly just venting here....and I know alot of you also get cramps and spasms. I have tried in the past the calcium, magnesium, zinc, drinking more water, eating lots of bananas for potassium, did all those things in hopes it would help my spasms, but it never did. So Im trying these things again & it's only been a couple days, but I fear it's all due to the steroids starting to wear off and maybe more of too much compression going on in my spine. Again, Im seeing my PM for a follow up tomorrow so I'll ask him about all this. Has any one else's doctors ever told them the spasms and cramping can be related to nerve compression?

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Hi Baybreeze,
I'm so sorry your having all this trouble with spasms & cramps. I had injections this past july and I got alot of cramping in my nerve damaged foot & lower leg for a few months afterwards. I never did find out why but it was dierectly related to the injections. I didn't have any improvement from the injections just the cramping andi t did go away as time went on.

I' m sorry I don't have any help for you. Just wanted tolet you know wht happened to me. I hope you feel better soon.

God Bless

Carol

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

I am so sorry to hear about those cramps. You have my completely sympathy!! Wow those are awful to get up and walking it off is generally not an option. I just had my last dose of the medrol pack this morning and I noticed my leg wanting to cramp up this morning. I think it's the steroids probably triggering mine.

I dont know any better ways to keep those from creepin in. They are like mother nature, and just as unpredictable.

Maybe you've got a double whammy here with the injections and other issues that are making things worse for you right now. I hope the PM offers you some better ideas on how best to circumvent those for you.

Do you have any biofreeze around to rub on there after the fact? It brings me some topical relief to the areas after the fact that help calm it down a little sonner.

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Yes, actually I do have Biofreeze and a wide assortment of other topical agents. I could start my own drug store LOL. None of them seem to help much, though. I don't know why I buy all these things, b/c most of the time they dont help. I guess it's desperation with a smidgeon of hope that maybe something will help. I'm trying to drink alot more today to see if that helps any, then just see what the doc thinks tomorrow.

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

I hear you.. I take calcium/mag/postassium at least every other day and it does help me with mine so far. I buy crap too and turns out it doesnt work and I knew when I bought it. Hope is a wonderful thing most of the time, except on the wallet.

Hang in there. Let us know what he says. Keep ur muscles warm.

This is exactly what happened to me after my last nerve block with the steroid injections. I thought it was related to the stenosis or he injured my nerve. I wonder if it is due to the injections since you had a similiar issue? I am still suffering from last September with the cramps in the back. Since they increased my meds I am experience relief but we all know that is just a temporary fix. That is encouraging that yours went away. How long did it take Mamma?

Bay, I have always thought this was related to the stenosis. I thought my deep cramps felt like that same old pain I had in my legs. Do you think it is?

Now I am totally confused whether it is the injections or the stenosis and I bet you are too Baybreeze.

Mamma, do you have stenosis too?

I will definitely be lifting you up in prayer. Those cramps are the pits that is for sure.

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

I am so thankful for this topic...I, too, am experiencing more than usual cramping in my back and legs (down to my toes), since my injection that was done on January 30th. At times, it feels like whenever the doctor put the injection in! It is a deep, cramping sensation. Sometimes, whenever I am walking, the cramping feels like it is going really deep! It is just hard for me to explain if properly. I pray that we will soon find some "relief."

Baybreeze I just wanted you to know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know how bad spasms can be because I have them so often in my neck and back areas but not in comparison to yours. Hopefully you will find out something soon.

Hugs
Linda

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Hi,
Pepper,
I believe it took a few months to go away. Yes I do have stenosis, well I did at the begining of my surgeries. Since I have that grade 2-3 sp;ondy I guess I still have the stenosis to some degree. I go to my spine dr. on monday, I have a long list of q's for him.

I pray everyone's cramps go away soon, there the worst.

God Bless

Carol

I can say that the cramping pains i'm having in my buttocks and back of thighs sure feels the same as what I had before surgery, this happens while standing or walking. I certainly don't have all the same pain I had before surgery, but this particular thing seems too familiar.

It is very strange that both you and Mama have stenosis and ended up with the same cramp & spasm problems after gettig injections. I got my first injection mid December and felt great for about 3 weeks. I had my 2nd injection in mid January (couldnt do it sooner due to all the holidays & scheduling of other people). Felt pretty good again, then had my last injection Jan 28th. Even with the injections I still had some pain, but as you know we are used to it and it seemed mild to me. Now since my surgery in Sept 06, ive' had some cramps & spasms here and there (aside from when I was in alot of pain), but lately it's just been happening alot and spreading aroudn to more places again. But yes, I am confused too....because maybe it does have something to do with the injections.

Thank you everyone for your replies!

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Who knows maybe it is the combination of stenosis and injection? So confusing and painful too!!

Hope those pains go away soon.

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Well I just got back from the PM appointment. I told him about the cramps & spasms and he did say it's possible to get them when you have nerve compression. He also said to make sure I am hydrated enough and am getting enough potassium, magnesium, etc...He said lack of these things would be more common causes and one should make sure they are getting enough of all of that first and see if it helps. I did tell him I've tried these things and also before surgery my spasms were out of control & once I had surgery they mostly stopped. But anyyway, just wanted to let you know what he said and that nerve problems can be a possibilty to cause cramps & spasms.

Oh, he did also ask If I wanted a muscle relaxer, and he already knew Flexerial & Skelaxin did nothing for me. So he said if I want to I can try Soma, so I figured I'll give it a try. I read about it & the directions say not to take it while taking any kinds of antihistamines so I'll have to take it tomorrow. I am loaded up with antihistamines right now due to a sinus infection or cold, or allergy.

Baybreeze the first time you take the soma be sure that your have no plans or need to accomplish anything for a few hours. It will make you sleepy.

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Hi Bay -- good luck with the soma. Spasms and cramps are so painful and I really really hope you find some relief. I had to practically leap out of bed to walk one off the other day and my youngest dog got so scared he started barking at me and my cramp. I guess I interrupted his doggie dream!

Re: More Frequent and Spreading Spasms/Cramps Again

Thanks gals. Pepper - thanks for that info. Actually my PM did make that clear to me as well and it's stickered all over the script bottle. Fortunately right now I dont have to go anywhere, though unfortunatley it's b/c I lost my job. So i've been just hunting for one on the internet. I hope this Soma helps. Maybe it will because my spasms & cramps are not constant 24-7 like they were before surgery. I think before they just took over my body and it was too much, nothing helped. At least now I am not in constant spasms.
