Degenerative disc disease at L4-L5 and L4-S1 level

Dear all,
I am new to this site and I need your suggestion to the problem in my back and leg. Four months before, I had a severe pain in nerve associared with numbness in my left leg and I suffered like in hell. Later I had a pain injection and pain was reduced. But still I can not walk fast and do any hard work. Mean while Last month(12/06/2008) I went to consult an ortho specialist in India. As per his advice, I took MRI scan and it's result shows I had disc herination at L4-L5 level and L5-S1 level with cadual migration of herinated disc behind S1 vertiebral body compressing the left S1 nurve root severly. Hence the doctor suggest me to do surgery immediately and moreover he added that there was no solution for this problem other than surgery. But I am afraid to accept his suggestion.
Now I am in Kuwait doing my work but not having so much pain in my leg. But my thoughts are always on my pain that it would cause any permanant disablity.
Please suggest me , what should I do?
Should I do surgery immediately or try some other physiotherpy treatment?
Really i am in confused mind and can not not concentrate anything.
Please do advice.

I would definitely try physical therapy first. Surgery should be your last resort. Try another surgeon for a second opinion.
