Back pain/bulging disks/pinched nerve question

I have a pinched nerve on the left side at l4/l5 l5/s1, and I have a lot of back pain above that. The pinched nerve itself is more of a nuisance and causes me some numbness in my foot/leg. My question is : is the pain above the bulging disk/pinched nerve normal, or do I have other problems going on that the MRI missed? It's probably 8-10" above those disks all through the middle of the spine it feels like, and is so painful I can barely sleep if I do sleep, and has come on gradually, after I was diagnosed with the pinched nerve.
Thanks,
Mark
