Torn Ligament

Been having for years, pain, severe at times in my lower back. Can't get up from a chair, lean to right and can hardly walk. Usually it goes away for a time, but this time it has lasted for over 5 weeks. Went to a chiroprator. He gave me some relief, but then the pain came back. After pressing aroung my spine, he hit the sore spot, which sent a numbing pain down my leg. He said I have a deep torn ligament. He puts heat on it and some stimulating machine on it and then put on mineral ice. He has given me some exercises to do. Feeling somewhat better. But after I sit a while, the pain become intense. My question is does a ligament tear heal or is surgery necessary? Thanks for your response.
