Discogram Results

My neurosurgeon called me this morning to discuss my discogram results. I have 2 bad disc....L4-5 and L 5-S1. Both of those disc on the ct scan after the discogram, had dye on the outside of the disc lining. <I have 2 tears on each of those disc and apparently the tears are all the way through> The disc height has narrowed. One of the disc is bulging and one is protruding? I get confused on the difference in bulging and protruding. So, I am having a fusion on both disc on dec. 16. <extremely nervous but confident> My doc is going to use the cage and plate. And he is going through the front. So a vascular surgeon will come in and move things so the neuro doc can get to the disc. i see the vas. surgeon on dec. 9. It all sounds so scary.....but I am so tired of living in pain and taking pain meds. I cannot function as I once did. I am a very active person so this back issue has made me very depressed. As far as the discogram is concerned......i am glad i had that done even though it was super painful but it has helped me to decide if i wanted to go through with this surgery. We now know my pain is caused from bad disc. I hope this helps you as you will get a call from your doc as well.

God bless you all....back pain is 1 painful thing to deal with....

Re: Discogram Results

Hi Lynn-

My herniated discs are the same as yours L4-L5 and L5-S1. L4-L5 has a tear and mild disc disease as well. I am also tired of pain and pain meds, as I too used to be an active and industrious person. I am also a mother to a 15 month old little girl.
I was looking at a fusion anyway, due to my spondylolisthesis, and will probably have to have a 2 level fusion now, like you.
Your surgery is coming up quick! Didn't you just schedule this recently? I figured I'de have to wait at least a month once it is scheduled. I meet with the surgeon on Wednesday so hopefully I will know something then...

Re: Discogram Results

hi Meggs....

yes, i scheduled my surgery today. My daughter will be out of nursing school for 2 weeks so I decided that would be a good time to go ahead and do it. You don't know your discogram results yet huh? Let us know how your appt goes with your surgeon. Has the doc at all discussed fusion yet? And did he say how he would go about doing it? Ive got to research about the way my doc is gonna do this HA He is going in through the front. Sounds so painful ack Belly hurting and back hurting during recovery but oh well.....I am just ready to feel better!

Keep in touch and good luck girl! By the way, i have a 3 year old adopted girl. Main reason i need to get back better huh.....

Re: Discogram Results

I don't know the official discogram results, other than that it hurt which I know means that some of my pain is coming from the discs. After the procedure, I asked the Dr. who did it if he thought I had pain coming from the discs, and he said "yes" and that the surgeon would go over everything with me.
The only way to fix my other problem, the spondy, is with a fusion, so that surgery has always been on the option table. He wanted me to have the discogram done first to see if that was causing pain as well. He said if it was, I would need a fusion at 2 levels instead of just one.
Chasing around a small child is definately DIFFICULT with major back issues isn't it!?! My husband and I would also like more children, and I can't get pregnant until this is resolved. We were at one point hoping to try this spring. That is obviously NOT going to happen, so the sooner I get this fixed the better
