PLEASE HELP, Back and Neck pain after seeing chiro.

Hi, I've been having neck and back pain for going on 2yrs after seeing a chiropractor. I was initially seeing her for muscular pain I had been experiencing for 7yrs from tmd. I was recommended that a cranial chiro was the way to go so i had the consultation and was told I had some spinal issues that was causing all of my symptoms. I informed her though that I was not having any spinal pain; just muscular and just wanted to have some cranial chiro work done. She insisted though that I have a full spinal manipulation and since I was desperate for some pain relief I decided to go along with her treatment. About 3 months of seeing her I started having actual back, neck and spinal pain and had to start sleeping with a special pillow and have a back support when driving. I also noticed the more I went there when I thought I was laying straight I was actually laying at a slant. I informed my chiro about this and she said it was natural to feel pain and it would get better, but it didn't and got much worst. I eventually told her that I wanted to get another x-ray to check the progress. Once she gave me an x-ray I swear she said "uh,oh" I asked her what was wrong and she said I needed more treatments to relieve my spinal pain. She said she would do it free of charge, but I declined and left.

Now about 3 months after seeing her I had a big drop in energy, my joints were very sore and popping everywhere. It felt like my whole body was out of aligned. I went to a spinal specialist and found that I had scoliosis in my thoracic and lumbar areas and 3 bulging discs in my cervical. I was told that I didn't have any nerve damage or pinched nerves and was recommended to a physical therapist. After 3 months of PT I didn't feel any different so I decided to see a pain specialist and here I am now. The Dr. is doing some blood work and ordered an x-ray of my neck(flexed).

My feeling is that with the many manipulations I had with the chiro it's thrown off the natural curvature of my spine which is causing joint pain throughout the rest of my body and the other numerous symptoms I'm having

I'm not sure now if I should go back to a chiro to readjust my spine or continue with physical therapy.

If anyone could please give me any kind of advice I would greatly appreciate it.

These are some of the my symptoms:

Back/Neck Pain
Loss of energy
Sudden hair-loss
Low Immune system
Hard to concentrate
Burning sensation in hands
Pain in moving hands and fingers
Popping in joints
Slowed Metabolism
Little to no sex drive
Pain and cracking in knees
Weakness in back
Unconscious gasping of air due to pressure on back/spine

Re: PLEASE HELP, Back and Neck pain after seeing chiro.

You'll find that many of us here are not too hot on chiropractors, for the very reasons you're posting. A GOOD chiropractor has his time and place, but it's hard to know who's good and who isn't. The 8 or 9 chiros I've seen over the years varied greatly. I don't think any two of them used the same methods. Only one did me any good, and he was very gentle and stayed away from certain areas of my spine that were clearly off limits, due to a previous fusion. Most of the chiropractors I went to determined that one leg was longer than the other, as chiros tend to tell everyone. Well, duh! I have a 75 degree curve in my spine! One hip is higher that the other, so one leg is going to seem longer than the other! The kicker is when they adjusted me and then said it was all even now! Baloney!!! Most of the chiros I went to were assembly line chiros, treating everyone the same, no matter what the problem. And they usually said I needed to come every week or twice a week for x number of months. Again, baloney! If they had taken the time to actually read all the stuff I wrote on their forms, they would have given me much different answers!

I no longer darken the door of ANY chiropractor. I couid tell you more, but you probably don't want to hear it all! Suffice it to say, if you have a real back issue, not just aches and pains, you should not go to a chiropractor unless your medical doctor clears you.

Keep going through whatever they're recommending. Back issues can be elusive. We all have had to go through pretty much the same steps, mostly to satisfy the insurance companies that the least invasive things were all tried first before the more expensive testing and treatments were considered. Trust me, if you reach the point of talking about surgery, you'll be glad if you know you've given PT your best shot. You want to exhaust every option in order of least invasive first.

I really wouldn't recommend seeing a chiropractor again, seeing as it seems that that's where the big trouble started. I hope you get the help you need.

Blessings,
Emily

Re: PLEASE HELP, Back and Neck pain after seeing chiro.

I'm like Emily...stay away from chiros, unless your doctors recommends that you see them for specific reasons. Personally, my PT is absolutely great and is far better than seeing a chiro.

If I were you I would keep up with the PT and all that they can offer-which often takes time. Do the exercises that they give you and see if they don't help in the long run.....

good luck......
