2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

Well 2 months since the surgery(minimally invasice micro-discectomy). My low back feels good. Just a little tight. However, my leg and foot pain have not stopped for the last 3-4 weeks. I called the surgeon. They put me on another round of steriods. Was really hoping the sciatica would go away. How much longer???????????????? I am kinda frustrated if you could not tell. AAAAHHHHH!

Any thoughts?

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

I had a Laminectomy March 5th, 2009 and by June I was going back to PM for injections due to sciatica. My surgery was for stenosis at L4/5.

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

Hi there, just a little bit of info from my own experience. I had a microdiscectomy May 2008, doing great now, however initially when I was 3 months post op instead of letting my body heal (nerves) and giving myself time to recover I had a epidural injection and I wished afterwards that I could get back to the pain that I was complaining about. I took predisone etc. lyrica, almost died from it, well, much to my relief, the wonderful folks here told me that 3 months post op was early and to cool my jets abit, I followed there advice and low and behold my body over the months that followed healed the nerves that were pushed around and injured during the surgery. For some unknow reason I thought that I should be out and about doing everything that I did before surgery in 6 weeks not having any consideration of what my body just went through. I ended up with my osteoporosis getting worse from the steroids, dry eyes syndrome and psorasis from a comprised immune system, but my back was fine. Do not panic, take a deep breath, while we speak your body is healing. I used music to calm my raw nerves while they were repairing themselves, it helped. Blessings

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

I can relate. I'm 3 mos. post-op (tomorrow actually) from an L5-S1 partial discectomy and continue to have periodic sciatic pain in my right thigh and more persistent pain/burning in my right foot. It was actually worse a couple of weeks ago then seemed to improve a bit and now it's acting up. Then again, it's been a long week at work including 2-days of travel so I've been unable to keep up on the walking and stretching like I usually do. Plain old motrin seems to take the edge off. If it's still bothering me in a couple of months I'm gonna try and get an MRI (the doc isn't particularly concerned since the pain isn't constant and it's still pretty early).

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

I had the pain in my leg for 9 months that would come and go. It finally went away. It now has been two years since my surgery. I still get numbness and last week my other leg just gave out on me and I went down. I had a laminectomy and disectomy L3-L4-L5 I refused a fusion so it didn't fix all the back problems but eventually it did stop the sciatica. It was so bad prior to surgery, I felt like cutting off my leg. 2 months is still so recent. The nerves have to heal

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

Thanks Guys and Gals. I am a bit stubborn and want to be better now. I know it will take more time, I guess I just needed to hear it from others who have gone thru it. That is why I keep coming back to this board. Just so frustrating after all the money and time. BUT, I am still much better than before my surgery. I actually bent over (slowly and carefully) to touch my toes yesterday. Could not get all the way down, still too tight. However, I did not feel one pain in my low back or butt. Now that I felt good about. So I'll keep going waiting for the sciatica to subside and get better, just waiting for the nerves to heal. Thanks again for your thoughts and support.

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

hi there

Im post laminotomy L5/S1 now for 5 1/2 months still have pain around lower back and pain in left calf and pain in right buttock. feel fine sometimes sitting etc but as soon as i do something slightly strenuous the aches and pains come.

im only 24 and would like any ones input if this is normal post op, My Neuro doesnt seem too concerned as i had another MRI done and everything seemed fine!

Am i being impatient? how long till i can return to gym and feel normal again?

This condition really wears down on a person as well as their dignity!

Re: 2 month post-op from discectomy L4/5

Hi Miltondecarver,

Have you considered piriformis syndrome? The symptoms for both problems are very similar and it is conceivable that anyone can have both at once, especially if after a fall or other trauma. I had a microdiscectomy 7 yrs ago and know what the pain and related sciatica is like. I now have piriformis syndrome and all the sciatica type problems have returned but I have no pain in the lower back just in my bum,hip and leg. It might be worth checking out.
Good luck
Helen
