Question New member (27) with ongoing sciatica. Help please.

Hi there.
Im new on here so I hope this is the right place to be posting this, if it isnt forgive me.
I am 27 and I have had sciatica for about 8 years or so. The first time I had it, it was really bad im not sure how it came about to be honest but when the pain would come on I would have to bend forward as though I was touching my knee with my face, and there would be excruciating pain going down my left leg. It was also an uncontollable reflex some I didnt have any chocie to do. Then as the years have passed I have got it roughly every two years and it lasts for about the same amount of time (3-6 weeks) but luckily I havent ever got it as bad as the first time and it doesnt come with the leg nerve pain anymore just really painful to move/bend. I recently got it about two weeks ago and went straight to the doctor who prescribed me with diclofenac and co-codamol, which I didnt think really worked apart from making me constipated lol.
Anyway as the pain is still there I went back to the doctor today and told him I still have pain and he prescribed me with Co-Dydramol, is this any good? I have never heard of it before?
Also what else can I do to help with my lower back pain? the doctor is referring me to a specialist so im hoping they will be able to tell whats wrong.
On a last note my father has the same problem which im assuming is hereditory and he suggests some excercises he swears by them in fact, but the pain killers are good because it means I can carry on as normal.
I dont want to be like this as im only 27 and I have been told that this could lead to surgery which scares me tbh. I have also been told that I may have a bulging disc or a forward tipped pelvis. If you saw my lower back it really dips in and then out again towards my coxix bone which I personally think looks abnormal.
Thanks for listening and I look forward to hearing from anyone with some good advice on my questions.

Re: New member (27) with ongoing sciatica. Help please.

Hi there,
You really need an mri scan to see if there is any spinal damage or other condition that could relate to your problems. Sounds like it could be a disc problem that rights itself after a while. This is good news, well, not all good obviously. but if you exercise your back and spine, pilates, yoga when u fell ok it can strenghthen your muscles which will help make u less prone to another attack.Surgery is the last resort, I had a sucessful microdiscectomy 7 yrs ago.
Hope this helps

Re: New member (27) with ongoing sciatica. Help please.

I have low back pain with sciatica and hip pain. I just started acupuncture for the pain, because I've read that back pain is one of the top 5 things that acupuncture is good for. Obviously I can't tell you from one session how it is. My back doesn't hurt much right now, but I'm supposed to do 8 sessions minimum. If you have any interest at all in complimentary medicine I can post an update later on about how it worked for me.

Re: New member (27) with ongoing sciatica. Help please.

If you think you have a deformity and pain I think you should have an MRI and show it to a specialist or spine surgeon. I am at a place where the surgeon wants to operate and I don't have any other options apart from just continuing with the medication and suffering the pain for the rest of my life. This might be where I am going to be anyway. So sorry I don't have any other suggestions apart from the MRI and a Specialist. But as I said these problems are very here and there and I don't seem to be able to get any real answers either apart from surgery or not?
