Smile Still in pain 5 months after micro d

Hello everyone

I have been reading a lot of these posts for a while now even before my L5 S1 microdisectomy in March 2010. Reading these has helped me understand what other were going through. I feel for everyone who is still in pain cause I'm in the same boat. I'm a 32 year old father and police officer and my life has completly done a 360 for the worst in the last year or so. I did not want surgery but I was having so much pain in my lef leg and numbness in both legs that I decided to have the surgery. In a way I regret it now but what choice did I have. I have tried everything imaginable including 7 months of PT with no results. My doctor says it could take 15 to 18 months to get better but I really don't have much faith anymore. As soon as I sit for a period of time the pain and numbness comes back. I hope the god I am wrong so I can have my life back. I have another MRI at the end of the month so we will see from there. I will be crushed if the herniation is back cause I don't want to go throught this s^#^$#t again!!!!!!!
PS: I hope all of you get better and try to smile even if you don't feel like it

Re: Still in pain 5 months after micro d

Hi North,

I don't know if you 've seen any of my comments. I am 18 months post op from selective endoscopic microdiscectomy on three lumbar disks. I am just now starting to see the postive results of the surgery. My advice to you would be to plan on lots of patience and to allow yourself to have a slow, slow, steady recovery. Everytime I pushed myself with PT, I would actually set myself back. Thus, I had an 18 month roller coaster of a recovery. Steady and slow may prevent you from going through what I did. You are young and have a long life ahead of you. Set aside the next year for slow and steady progress, so that you will be able to enjoy your full recovery for the great remainder of your life.

Best wishes,

AZ REB

Thanks for that I will do my best. I hear you about the rollercoaster ride, it's up and down all the time. I have to work so it makes it harder to heal properly. I'm not on patrol anymore but still just office work is painfull because of the sitting. Were you able to remain at work during the your recovery?

Re: Still in pain 5 months after micro d

I had to resign from my job due to my back issues. I am just now contemplating returning to work in the next few months. Employers, disability companies and social security have very little compasion for people with back issues. I am fortunate that my wife earns a good wage and we have substantial savings. The one thing that makes me appreciate this website so much, is that most everyone on here knows what we are all going through. The rest of the world is quite impatient and not very understanding about our plight. You are about half my age, so I am hopeful that you will have a slow, steady recovery and I hope that you will then be able to enjoy the rest of your life with minimal pain.

I wish the best for you,

AZ REB
