failed cervical fusion
After reading posts on this board I know this is a familiar and all to common story. In December of 2007 I had a fusion of c 3-4 and c6-7. I had some relief but only for a short time. I have been back to my NS several times and have had MRI and cat scans. They took x-rays and have been assured that there is nothing wrong with my surgery and that nothing else can be done. I finely went to another NS because my Physiatrist said that he thought that my issues were coming from c7 t1. The new NS ordered a bone scan cat scan and found that the c6-7 fusion did not take. After almost three years of pain headaches and complaining to a NS that would not look into the issue I am told that I need surgery again. This time they want to go posterior and fuse c 6-7 and clean up c7 t1. The NS is planning to use donor bone and wire.
My questions are:
1. Is wire the best way to accomplish this?
2. What is the recovery time? Not what the NS says but in real terms how mush time will I miss from work. I am a sales rep that drives all day and calls on foodservice establishments. I only carry a laptop and really have no lifting. I can probably get a sales trainee to drive me and help to train him or her at the sometime.
I know that this back surgery is not a perfect fix and that not all results are the same. I am trying not to be bitter about a NS missing a failed fusion. I am planning on getting a second opinion from a orthopedics that specializes in spine issues.
It is difficult to be patient as I am eager to finely get some relief from this constant pain in the neck but after reading all the posts on this subject I will proceed with caution as it can always get worse.
Thanks for listening as its does help to know that there are other people out there that are willing to share there issues and experiences.
