Back pain but only on one side.

Sorry but this one is kinda of long...
I normally am answering posts but now I am in the need of some help or info. Ok here is what is going on. On Oct 4th I woke up and found extreme pain in my back the shoulder blade area and down both sides of my spine about and inch or so out from the spine. The pain with my shoulder at first I thought was from sleeping wrong or such. Well I tried to work it out but it only made it worse. Also the pain would go down my arm..but only in the front part and back part along the muscles. Also I should mention this is on my left side. The pain is intense even if I dont use my arm. I can just let it rest in my lap or on something and it will still ache. So I went in that same day to talk to one of the doctors I can see(military base and I have three doctors in the group I can use). Well I explained what was going on and he said he couldnt figure it out. He said take motrin to help ease the pain and come back in a week or so if it didnt go away. Also some blood tests were done to see if it had anything to do with my liver and muscle break down. I was taking a yeast infection med right before this pain came along. So the doctor I guess wanted to make sure there wasnt a connection.
Well low and behold I was popping motirn like candy but no relief matter of fact the pain was getting worse. So I went back the next morning considering I have two young kids to take care of. The youngest was extremely upset because I couldnt even pick him up. Saw the same doc and he said the only thing he could think of was muscle spasms. So he gave me Flexeril(muscle relaxer) and told me to keep taking the motrin. Yes I told him I wasnt getting any relief with taking the motrin but he insisted I continue taking it.
I personally dont understand how muscle spasms can be like that... I can see tight muscles causing pain but spasms in that area just doesnt make sense to me.
Now here it is ten days later. I tried to stop taking the flexeril..matter of fact went two days without it...the night of the second day I was in horrible pain. The Flexeril doesnt seem to working as well now.
So my questions are: Has anyone ever heard of muscles spasms causing pain like that?? Also what could be causing this pain if it isnt muscle spasms??
I will be seeing another doctor later this week if things dont improve. Any suggestions or info would be great. I hate having to depend on meds to get me where I can play with my kids and take care of the house. Yeah I know there are people out there saying hey great excuse for not doing house work...LOL

Re: Back pain but only on one side.

HI -

Muscle spasms can cause extreme pain, but they are also the bodies protection response to disc problems. I had a ruptured disc in my neck and the symptoms were identical to yours, only on the right side. The muscle spasms were sooooooooooooo horrible!!!!! Talk to the doc about having a MRI to see if this might be your problem...

Hope you find some relief soon!

Re: Back pain but only on one side.

I agree with Kelley, muscle spasms most often indicate another problem. They can be very painful, but your pain may not be only the spasms. Whatever the root problem is may also be causing some of the pain too. Addressing the pain is a good start, but you also have to find the cause of the problem in order to get any long term relief. I hope that this other doctor will be more helpful in finding the actual problem.

I sympathize with you completely regarding dealing with young children while you are in pain. I have a 3 year old and a one year old and it is very hard to take care of them and the house when I am really hurting which is still way too often.

Re: Back pain but only on one side.

Thank you both. I will talk to the other doctor and see if she can figure more out. I will see aobut a MRI...military doctors tend to be bullheaded when it comes to getting stuff done off base. Wish me luc...

Re: Back pain but only on one side.

Hi
I have just read your message regarding muscle spasm. My son was also having muscle spasms in his back just below the left shoulder blade. This had been going on for 3 years and I finally got sick of it and told him to get a referral to a orthapeadic specialist. Low and behold after having X-rays we find out he has Scheuermann's Disease, he has a twist in his spine which was causing the spasms. He has alot of pain and somedays he can hardly move as his back locks up. We were told by the specialist that nothing can be done, which is annoying. I only wish I could find out more info as the website I found doesn't really explain alot. We live in New Zealand

Good luck

lindanz
