Lumbosacral pain

I want to know more about sacroiliac joint dysfunction.
I was in an accident two years ago . The driver was a convicted killer on parole. I stopped to help a woman who was screaming for help on the side of the road.I called 911 at a near by gas station, while awaiting the police the woman jumped in my car after running from her psycho husband.I let her stay in my car for safety.
After about three mins. the guy came from out of nowhere and slammed into the side of my car I had no time to react other than to brace myself . the guy was going appr. 35-40mph. The impact knocked my car side ways a few feet .I was wearing my seat belt and had my hands on the wheel,my foot was slammed down on the brake my body was turned to the left facing away from the side of impact. My car was almost t-boned .After running from the guy in my car I called 911 again ,and met them behind a local supermarket.I was really scared and shaken up.I did not feel any pain immediately
I talked to the officers from inside my car because my door was bent shut and I had a passenger in front and one other in back besides the lady I was helping. After an hour or so the officer escorted me home because the guy had not been found yet and I was afraid of a further attack. After getting out of car on the passengers side and standing up to walk I felt the pain in my back and hip area,my leg was a little numb but I was not in enough pain at that point to go to the ER.I had a trip scheduled for the next morning it was late and I was exhausted so I showered and went to bed.I awoke an hour later because of the pain and numbness in my back and leg .I had had back pain before and new the drill see the Dr. and make an appnt. with the Chiro . It was Easter so I put it off for the day .I was seen on Mon.morning by the DR.
who examined me and said oh you're banged up a little and you have a sprained neck and back .He gave me a presciption for a mild pain reliever and a muscle relaxer.I had been that morning by the Chiro. and tested he had said basically the same thing as the Dr.,I was adjusted and sent home I followed this treatment for 9 months, with very little improvement other than short term relief.I saw an orthepedic surgeon in Feb. and had a Ct scan done and the Dr. reffered me for Pt.I was not able to get the PT.due to lack of $$ from not being able too work. My other Drs. agreed to see me at first with deffered payments and small down payments. My ct scan was neg. for herniated disk, but revealed Lordosis,I had L234 scoliosis already and I'm not sure if thats what the results meant or not.My scoliosos was mild and had not given me much trouble in the past.I was extremely deppressed after getting the same diagnososis
from that Dr. and no help for the pain.I had a big disagreement with ,my chiro over him telling me to basically get used to it my pain would not get any better.I was not going to live in my bed the rest of my life,I was 26 I had an son to care for .I tried a cotisone shot,I had an adverse reaction wheezing and skin redness and rash.It caused alot of initial pain that lasted 4or5 days and did not help at all.I got desperate and began to research the net and used the sites where you can put in symptoms.I had pain over the right side of my low back and sacrum that radiated into my hip,and butt region, back of right leg pain/numbness on the right that extended to the back of my knee ,but some times would go to the heel and cause a burning sensation I was not able to do much of anything>I could not walk ,sit or stand for long I couln't sleep I was so down I lost ten lbs in 4 days I began to realize I had a fairly common injury that was being misdiagnosed .So I called a different Chiro who was an extremity specialist hoping he could help.Initially I felt better within few few treatment I had less pain,I began to come less often and could hold an adjustment for as long as 7-10 days. After 4 months he gave me the you are as good as your gonna get speech and sent me home his diagnosis was about the same, soft tissue damage .What the heck is that? That tells me nothing other than I hurt and nothing helps for long .I believe after much research that I have SIJ dysfunction
I think that I either damaged the hamstring when I braked so hard in the accident, and /or my sacroiliac was forced out of place due to the impact slamming me sideways and all my body weight was slung over to the right . I am moderatley familiar with basic anatomy and med. terminology from college. The SIJ is a synovial joint just like your shoulder or knee and it is my educated opinion the muscles and ligaments that support the structure were damaged in the wreck .I metioned this to my Dr. on a visit and his answer was I can't agree or help so..... what am I supposed to do the Drs. who have treated me have misdiagnosed and treated me.I don't have$ for more expensive Dr. visits to DR.s who are not familar with this problem. How can I get this Diagnosed and treated .I still have pain if I am in any way active other than to do my usual activitie,.which are minimal .I can't work full time anymore .I struggle doing every day things and exercise is out of the question even swimming hurts .If anyone has advice other than the normal taking meds.or streching techniques.I'd really appreciate the advice.

Re: Lumbosacral pain

Hi Audry: I am dealing with severe neck pain right now, but I am so sorry to hear about your experience. You have my heart felt sympathies for all of this. I have spinal arthritis and about 10 disks bulging (I am a 53 yr. old woman who has done a great deal of lifting for years; my spine looks compressed; I've had two back surgeries (neck and lumbar.)

Re. your finances, try to get social security disability and get an attorney for that. Re. your back pain (I've got low, mid and neck troubles), when the docs do the CTScans and MRIs, you are lying down. Think about it--when you stand up, more pressure is placed on the spine. Perhaps (if it was possible), if you had a scan or MRI (which I know you cannot afford now--soc. sec. would give you medicare at least--you desperately need ins.) standing up, there could be more disk damage than shows up lying down. My doc. just explained this to me, when I asked him (last Thurs.)about my MRI, which is not showing nerve compression. I live with unbelieveable pain and right now, I just about out of my mind with my neck. Typing really hurts me, as well as sitting. Yet, I feel I suffer to help others, thus, I felt compelled to respond to you. What a price to pay for being kind to a stranger; please never let this stop you from being kind to others. What is really sad, I wonder if those people you helped were on methamphetimines, especially the crazy boyfriend! For now, you need some pain management and some strong pain meds. That is all they are doing for me for now, but I believe I could be looking at another neck surgery and low back, in time. My sacrum is painful as well. Take care of yourself and my prayers are with you, PatG<p>[This message has been edited by PatG (edited 03-09-2002).]

Re: Lumbosacral pain

Thanks Patg ,
the comments you wrote were helpful.I did lose my kind spirit for a while after the woman I helped went to court on behalf of her crazy husband. They were drinking while taking a prescription medication intended for anxiety something similar to valium. The guy only got 20 days in jail for the crime.I appreciate the advice about the lying down ct scan that makes perfect sense .I will try to have another one done while standing .I also heard of a live x-ray called an arthrogram or flouroscopically guided ct scan
My mom is your age and has arthritis in her spine really bad.I hope you can find a solution to your pain or at least a Dr. willing to listen and help with long term presciptions for pain .I have yet to find one who will despense a strong pain killer for more than 10 days.I don't know if you have tried Vioxx or celebrex but she says they help her alot.thanks again Audrey Dunn

Re: Lumbosacral pain

One way to find out if it is the SI Joint or not is by the SI Block. I had one done about a year ago and it was the best thing that ever happened to me.
If the fusion they are doing on my L4-S1 does not lead to relief they are also thinking of fusing the SI joint, because of the awesome reaction I had to the block.
You asked if there was a way to find out. I believe that would be it.
Lisa
