how does EMG feel?

I am scheduled for EMG tomorrow . I tried to get thru SSEP but could not because it was toooooo painful.
Can you share your experience if you have had this exam please?? I am quite frightened, as the Dr gave me 2 Fentenyl patches, which are pain patched now used by cancer patients who have extreme pain.
Thanks!

Re: how does EMG feel?

Hey,

I've had a few of them over the last few years. The pain isn't too bad. It's the fact that you are watching while they put mutiple needles in and the loss of control of various muscles while they send electric pulses through them. There is no doubt that the test is painful but I have had worst by far.

Re: how does EMG feel?

Hey,

I had am EMG a couple of months ago. I had to say that it was a little worse than I expected. What I would suggest is if you have pain pills, to take them before you go. It does hurt, but it is quick little sharp stabs. I was uncomfortable for a week after and took my breakthru pills faithfully. I felt if I was a little more prepared to being the test uncomfortable, it would have made it easier. Don't worry too much about it cuz in the long run, it will give you answers.

Hope you have a wonderful night,

Re: how does EMG feel?

I am the queen of wimps, I hate pain and this test was nothing. it hurt a little but no big deal at all. after having back surgery, it's a cake walk.
don't stress over it, it will make your back pain worse.

good luck, let us no how you did <IMG SRC="http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/smile.gif">

remember to BREATH.

Re: how does EMG feel?

Thank you all so much for the inout and experiences you shared!
A funny story and a couple more ??? please!!!
I put on the Fentanyl patch at 630pm, and to my surprise, I felt very little. I even called a nurse friend of mine and she said I would feel very sleepy. Well, leave it to me to be unusual,, I had intended to take the patch off after a couple of hours, but since it was so 'benign' I left it on - the patch last 3 days giving a uniform dosage of painkiller...
BUT the next morning, I was 'hungover' and nauseated as heck!! he-he-he-,,, YUCK!! In fact I was so sick I had to CANCEL the exam as I could not even sit up without preparing to throw up!!It took another 24 hours to get that drug out of my system,, today I am ok, just a tad woozy,,,
So, my next question, is, Which of these other pain meds would be OKAY to take? Vicodin, oxycodone (percoset) or some other suggestion? I rescheduled for October 31, 2001,,,, Hhmmm, Halloween?? oh boy,,
Thank you so much,,
So , even tho I am only numb on the surface , when the juice is shot to my nerves it will make me have no control over my muscles??
I know I am stressing out FAR tooo much over this thing, it is just that the SSEP was like someone hitting the 'crazy bone' in my ankle nonstop and much more intense than I ever thought..
I thought I could take pain , but I will go right next to the Queen of Wimps,,I will be the Winey Princess,,,

Re: how does EMG feel?

Hi Whiney Princess - You'll do fine.

Half of the problem is your "dread", you'll psych yourself right into mongo pain.

If you have a couple percs, take them about an hour before the test with a bit of food. You don't "lose control" per se; muscle's contract due to electrical impulses; so when they pass a small jolt thru the muscle, it will jerk. Juice is on only a second, then gone, the anticipation is worse than the test. Yeah, it "hurts", but, as with anyone thats been through a surgery, everything is relative.

Relax as much as you can and pop a couple percs, you'll make it.

Re: how does EMG feel?

I had the emg done on my arm,and it hurt like hell. I did'nt even think it was going to hurt, I was barly able to get thought it. Well I had to go thought it again with my leg, well this time it did'nt hurt as much as my arm did. I'm not sure if it was because there is nerve damage in my leg or if it was because someone else did it?

Re: how does EMG feel?

Funny thing to me, everyone here has replied about taking pain meds before emg, but why have they told me to not take any after midnight before I go in for my emg? Just curious ! Slimmy

Re: how does EMG feel?

Hey slimmy and everyone else!!
Gee I don't know why you would be told that!MAybe they want to give you something right before the exam.,,,,
Well, this was a most brutal exam in my opinion!
getting shocked with the impulses was bad, ,, but I managed to hold my own! The ssecond part of the exam- when the tech sticks needles into the muscle and moves it around,,, well, I just lost it there! I just sobbed! I hung on as the tech poked my calf, then outer calf, and thigh. BUT when he probed in my back,, well, I thought I would slug him!! I screamed!. I had taken a total of two Vicodin between 11 am and 2 pm when the exam was started.
I don't think this exam revealed any thing remarkable for my condition,,,
Let us know about how your exam goes,, Who and where are you going to get this done slimmy?
Best of luck and God Bless!
