Question Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

I am having a Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done and I am scared to death. I read it hurts as the nerves are dieing. Since i blew the sciatic nerve and the pain is horrible I am scared to death.
What happen after you had it done?
What did they do to help you deal with the pain?
How long did it last?
Thanks for any input.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

I had an RFA done. It was done in the treatment suite of the Pain Mangement doctor's office. They did have to make sure to have the right nerve so they do induce some pain but the office I go to is great. The nurse was holding my hand and they gave me a little bit of versed so I'd be calm. As soon as they found the nerve to ablate they gave me more versed and some fentanyl in the IV and did the ablation. I don't recall the actual ablation since by then I was really out of it. For a day or two I felt like I'd been hit by a baseball bat and as if there was bruising (there was not). It did work well for me for about a year (SI joint) and I hope to do it again this year.

Thanks for answering. Did you pain when nerve was dieing? Mine will be si. I have chronic nerve damage. 3mm bugle at l3 l4 now. So having problem with that also.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

My SI nerve was irritated. If you have a nerve that is dying I'm not sure what the ablation would be for. An RFA is not a permanentmethod, it's meant to last a few years until the nerve crows back and again functions "normally". Some people have 1 ablation and find long lasting relief (such as a few years). My SI joint nerve pain is lesser than before the RFA.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

Thank you for posting about this. I hope all goes well for you.

I'm curious about this procedure as well since I'm not a candidate for epi due to my bad reactions to steroids & I'm wondering if this may be a possibility for me as well.

Would it do anything for a compressed L4 nerve root?

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

Sassy: many lumbar nerves are "eligible" for ablation. I too have adverse steroid side effects which started around a year ago. I can't tolerate ESI any longer. Are you treating with a Pain Management doctorM have you had a consultation with Orthopedic Spine Surgeon and/or Neurosurgeon which can provide non-surgical and surgical options. My OSS was the one who recommended ablation.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

I'm going thru the insurance rituals. GP sent me to PM who said no epi & sent me to PT. I can't get a referral to a spine specialist until PT is done.

No, what I mean is what the pain like after RFA as the nerve/nerves is dieing. I guess I am just so nervous after sciatic pain that pain medicine didn't help that with this medicine won't help.
Thanks,

Your welcome. I am not a doctor but for what I have been told it has helped many, but it depends on the person problem and what has been done in the pass. I have had 3 back surgeries. Last surgery I had was PLIF 2 level fusion in 08.
Good Luck hope you find some relief.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

Hi Mary. I have had this done twice with great success. Just as with SpineAz, mine was done with fentanyl for sedation and I had very little discomfort during the procedure. I also did not have pain afterwards. As the nerve has been "burned" it will not send pain signals out. You might feel bruised or sore (I did not) but there shouldn't be any real pain.

Hope this sets your mind at ease. If you have this procedure done, do be sure the dr. is doing it with fluoroscopy (like a live x-ray) as there are those who say they have done so many they can do it blind. Don't allow it to be done like that as the fluoroscopy helps the dr. place the needle just right.

I wish you great success. Please let us know how the procedure went and if it is helpful for you.

Carol

Hi, Carol. Thanks that makes me feel a little better. Why I am letting worry so much after all I have done I don't know unless it's because of the nerves.
Sometimes looking up things are good and sometimes it isn't. With the nerve blocks, which did help for about 3 to 4 weeks, they failed to tell me it could cause severe cramps. This a different PM doctor, mine doesn't do it, we will talk what could happen where I know.
Thanks,

Hi, No I haven't. I am concern about it since I have so much scar tissue as it is. I took the test and was given the ok and was told he thinks it would help. But I am so afraid.

Re: Has anyone had Radiofrequency Ablation (Rhizotomy) done

I just had RAR done yesterday [4-12-12] and there was no pain. Not sure why you are being told otherwise. You have an IV and they give you pain meds and something to help you relax... piece of cake!!! I had no pain when I left and have none today; it is fantastic!!!

I did have to have two diagnostics's done first to isolate where would get the best results. It was a little uncomfortable but not so much I wouldn't go back; which I did for the second one. On these they can't use any pain med's cause they need you to go home and do normal activities to see if it relieves your pain.

I guess everyone can have a different reaction but my pain made it worthwhile. I say go for it; I have no regrets!!!

Hope this helps you decide.
