Anyone have radiofrequency neurotomy, how long does pain last afterward?

I had cervical radiofrequency neurotomy 23 days ago. About a week ago I thought it was lightening up. My pain doctor said that the nerves get mad and the pain can get worse while they are dying. (I was given vicodan and lidocane patches to put on my neck, which do not stay put). But this week it has been bad again and almost hurts worse than before the procedure. I am wondering if anyone else has had this done and when did you notice any improvement. I am scared that the radiofrequency is not the answer to what my pain is.

I was rear ended two years ago, had already been seeing the chiro for some soreness then this made everything blow up. So have been to chiropractors, had physical therapy and now this. The neurologist I saw just said it was soft tissue but my pain has been so bad and just gotten worse. Initial MRI showed bulging in cervical but nothing else notable. I don't have insurance anymore and this is getting so depressing. Pain meds (tramoadol and vicodan don't do much of anything) either.

Re: Anyone have radiofrequency neurotomy, how long does pain last afterward?

Hi, and welcome to the board. I have never had this procedure on the cervical area, but have had it done 3 times in the lumbar region. It was always quite successful in lowering my pain, and I never had more pain following the procedure.

I noticed that you are seeing a neurologist; I also noted that you no longer have insurance, which is such a huge problem in this country. Ideally, you should see either an orthopedic spine specialist or a neurosurgeon with a fellowship, who devoted their practice to the neck and spine only. Since the procedure didn't help you, there is the possibility that the area is not the main pain generator and that's why you continue to have pain.

If you have not had an MRI, you do need one in order to get clear imaging. An x-ray simply will not show any nerve impingement and may not pick up on herniated disc, etc. A spine specialist is going to read the MRI or other studies and be able to find out what is going on that is causing your pain.

I do hope you will continue to post. Perhaps others here will have more ideas.

Carol

Re: Anyone have radiofrequency neurotomy, how long does pain last afterward?

I had a lumbar RFA (radio frequency ablation) of the SI joint in the spine and for about 2-3 days after I felt like I had been kicked in the back. More of that type of pain than nerve pain. But it did work. The symptoms re-appeared but are not as severe. I'd do it again if the symptoms were again continuous.
