YOWSA!! EXCRUCIATING SCIATIC PAIN!! Electric shock sensations!

Hi all...Today has been one of the worst days of my life. I don't know how I got to this point. I spent 5 hours in the walk in clinic just to be seen. I have excrutiating pain shooting from my lower back into the front to the place where my groin meets my leg. It goes around to my hip and shocks me and then goes down my leg to my foot. It feels like a warm sensation too going from my groin area down my leg. Its all very frightening.

The nurse practioner said I have a flare up of Sciatica and she prescribed pain meds and anti imflammatories. I am also going to be starting up physical therapy. I had this 3 or 4 years ago and went through therapy. Quite honestly I don't remember it ever hurting this bad. I must not have a very high pain tolerance.

I am wondering if this flare up happened because for the past 5 weeks I was driving my dads old chevy truck and had to push harder on the gas pedal and brake. Then I got my new little PT Cruiser and I barely have to tap on the break or accelorater. Could that have thrown my leg and glute out of whack?? Lets add in the fact that I have my time of the month and I have horrible cramps tonight. I feel swollen and bloated in my back and abs and intestines.

Has anyone had their pain shoot through to the front of your abs or where your ovary or groin area and then down your leg? Do you have the electric shock sensation?? I just need words of comfort tonight. Sorry to just dump all my problems out there. I have had a horrible day and been crying trying to cope.

Thanks for any replies.

Re: YOWSA!! EXCRUCIATING SCIATIC PAIN!! Electric shock sensations!

While very painful, sciatic pain is not dangerous to your health. It can come about for a variety of reasons, but the basics are that the sciatic nerve itself is irritated or one of the lumbar spinal nerves is irritated or compressed from something like a bulging disc or stenosis, and it radiates pain following the pathway that particular nerve takes....

The pain can take a variety of forms -- the electrical, shock sensations you are getting, a feeling of water running down your leg, a dull ache, a sharp jab, etc. You can have some of those sensations, or all, or they can alternate. The pain can be steady, or it can come and go. Any of these things would be considered for sciatic-type pain.

Have you tried icing? You can use ice or a gel pack 15-20 minutes per hour round the clock. You can try alternating heat and ice...sometimes that feels better. You can make an ice pop using a paper cup, filling it with water and freezing it. When frozen, remove top edge of paper, and just gently rub it over your lower back in circles, like a mini-massage.

If you can get into the following position, it may take the pressure off the sciatic nerve and provide a little relief: lie flat on the floor, hips up close to the edge of a couch or chair. Bend at the hip and knee so your calves are resting on the seat of the couch and your feet are parallel to the back of the couch...your body should look like this: _
l_ with this lower line_ being the floor where your back is lying...does that make sense?? Arms should be close to your body, palms facing the ceiling. RELAX and breathe deeply from the belly and if you can relax in this position, stay for about 5 minutes, or as long as comfortable. You can also just lie flat on the floor with knees bent, feet flat on floor, arms in the same position, and it will accomplish the same thing.

I used to find a quiet corner at an airport and lie like this to relieve my sciatic pain...then I could go on for a bit more.

Often this pain is a result of some inflammation and will go away in a couple weeks....it is important to keep moving, even though you may not feel like it. The PT will be able to show you appropriate exercises.

Try not to let your emotions get the best of you. It will cause your muscles to tense up even more and result in more pain. Do what you can to relax -- practice some deep breathing exercises, etc. Baby your back, but don't stop moving. Use good body mechanics and posture. Do not lift anything that weighs more than a gallon of milk. Try not to push or pull, reach up overhead or to the side, or bend or twist at the waist.

Pain in the hip, groin, saddle area, and down the leg are not unusual for pain stemming from the lower lumbar area.

I know it is hard to relax when something hurts so much. You can't help but think that anything that hurts this much must be something horrendous. But it is not in any way life threatening or even damaging to a part of your body. It is temporarily squeezing a nerve, but it won't make your paralyzed or anything like that...so try not to worry.

If the pain continues though, after a couple weeks you may want to have a MRI and make an appointment with a spine specialist to find out exactly what is causing the sciatic pain.

Re: YOWSA!! EXCRUCIATING SCIATIC PAIN!! Electric shock sensations!

Could it be a pinched nerve? I had what I thought was a stiff neck. Went through almost two weeks of hell. Pain got so bad that had I owned a gun, I would have killed myself! A friend of mine told me to go to a Chiropractor. With a second of him putting me in traction, the pain was gone and has never come back. The pinched nerve was in my neck but I have learned that a pinch nerve can do all kinds of crazy things. Check it out and I will be praying for you!

Re: YOWSA!! EXCRUCIATING SCIATIC PAIN!! Electric shock sensations!

Thanks! I got better for a couple of months and now it's back again. I don't know how I got back to this point so quick. My pains is in both legs where the legs meet the groin. I can tell I have pain in sciatic area in the back but why does it happen in the crease of the front of my leg? I don't get it.
