Intolerable Upper Back Pain when Sitting

Hi there,

I am hoping that maybe someone experienced the same issue as me. About a month ago I woke up with a bit of back pain after presumably sleeping the wrong way. I was having some tingling in my my arm - very minor and painless. Three days later the pain got to an intolerable intensity that has lasted until today.

The pain is very very localized. It is very close to my left shoulder blade, about 5 vertebrae's down. It is not near the vertebrae or in between the blades, but rather is fairly close to the left shoulder blade. When I reach around I can place pressure with it on my fingers.

The pain is excruciating everytime I sit. It feels like someone is slowly jabbing a pen in the area and tearing it upwards. The bigger problem is that I feel like my left arm, (between my shoulder and elbow and moreso in the back of the arm) weighs 100 lbs. The rest of my arm becomes immediately numb and tingly. The inside of the arm feels painful.

This pain is interfering with my life. I can't drive for more than 5 minutes. I cant sit with clients, with co-workers or even sit to socialize. I can't sit at a table and eat. I can't sit and go out for dinner. I can't sit with my kids. I can sit and slump down in the couch. The pain immediately goes away with lying down on my back.

Has anyone experienced a similar issues? I obviously have a feeling that there is neural interruptions somewhere. It's just that it is controlling every aspect of my life and work.

I would appreciate any thoughts.

Re: Intolerable Upper Back Pain when Sitting

Welcome to the board. Sorry you are having back pain. It's amazing how things can be OK one day, and turn your life upside down the next.

Nothing pops immediately to mind, but I would like a bit more information, if you don't mind.

Do you still have tingling in your arms? Does the pain only occur when you sit, or are there other times or other body positions when it happens? Does it matter if you raise your arms overhead?

Usually problems with pain when sitting are a result of a problem in the lumbar area...but I guess then the pain is different from what you are describing. Tingling arms usually signal a cervical nerve compression...the dermatomes from the cervical spinal nerves stop at about the top of the shoulder blade...or like even with the top of the arm pit. Then you go into the thoracic vertebrae. T4, for example is right at nipple level.

Have you seen your doctor about this pain? If it were muscular or soft tissue, it should have cleared up within a couple weeks.

Hopefully someone reading this will have experienced something similar and will be able to offer some enlightenment!

tetonteri66

The pain only hurt when I sit. The numbness is near non-noticeable until i sit.
The area in question is exactly at the location you mention - right in the thoracic vertebrae - right at the nipple level or at the armpit level. The tingling normally happens at the back of my arm.

I need to stand most of the day at work at my desk and driving is a terrible nightmare.

I havent seen the doctor yet - in fear of it messing up and LTD app im going through. I am 100% healthy asides from this.

You are right - one day i am find and the next day I am a total wreck.
